I have one of the early Macbook Pros that doesn't have FW800. It seems ridiculous to buy a new computer for lack of one port, but I'm thinking I don't have much of a choice.

Is it possible to power the Red Drives off AC? If I can do that, I can use the Belkin Expresscard-CF adapter when shooting to CF, and the Sonnet Expresscard-FW800 adapter (which doesn't provide power) while shooting to Red Drives. Footage would be transferred to a FW400 external drive.

Does anyone know if this would work? I know it won't be as fast, but I'm not keen to fork up over two grand on a new laptop yet.

Speed is your friend when dealing with RED files. Unless time is not important to you, you will regret having to use that FW400 connection.

get a esata express34 card and use an external esata drive, problem solved.

Sometimes I use a MacBook (no fw800) to download footage and it works just fine with a Lexar fw800 cardreader and a fw 800 to 400 cable. Downloading a full 8GB card takes about 5 minutes to the internal drive.

it just comes down to the question of, is the increased speed of fw800 worth nearly a grand to upgrade the laptop. of course there are other benefits too, such as having more processing power, new warranty, bigger hard drive, multiple fw ports, but i'm not keen to drop another g.

other thing is i'd like to use the fusion f2 which needs that fw400 port for power.

Just one stupid question. I don't have red one yet bud soon I will, the question is what machine will be good enough to work with 4K, what configuration or simply what present models are people using for this, or is laptop enough for complete workflow of RED footage. I know it is stupid question, but I am kind of no expert in digital surrounding, please give some information. I am trying to see how much will I need to spend asside from RED and it's basic accesories.

What macbook pro doesn't have fw800? unless it was only the 17", because my 17" isn't "new", but it has fw800.

overall performance boost is a gr8 thing, i would wait for the next snow leopard and fcs to get a new macbook pro, about april next year i think, also it will give u time to save up some money and get the best one they can offer and fully upgrade it.
