  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will a Super 16mm Zeiss 50mm Superspeed cover Super 35?

Will a Super 16mm Zeiss 50mm Superspeed cover Super 35?

Thats my question. I heard somewhere that it would.

Thanks

Hi,

No it wont, it is for S16! Sometimes people use a 35mm lens for S35.

No it would cover part of the area shooting at 2k with a Red1 will give you a full 2k frame though. I often would get super speed 16mm lenses to use on the Red1 for higher frame rates at 2k to gain that extra stop and a half.

According to my experience and logic no matter what the focal length is a 16mm format lens will cover approximately half of the area of a 35mm format. Dropping to 2k will give a full frame image, depending on the lens it may be slightly vinyted.

Bringing back an old thread...

Warning: Be very careful when trying a new lens on a spinning mirror camera (high end video or film).

After reading this post I thought I would try a 50mm S16 Optar illumina lens on my Konvas 35mm film camera. Yes it covered the full S35 frame, BUT...turning slowly, starting at minimum focus, the lens would focus up to 4 ft, and then the back of the lens would touch the mirror! --Resting on a thin metal ring holding the rear lens element, thankfully not the glass! There was zero damage caused to camera mirror or the lens. The camera was not running, but if the mirror was spinning, there could have been damage to both the lens and the mirror. I was surprised the rear element pushed out that far when focusing for a telephoto lens.

Don't trust everything you read. *Maybe* you can use a Zeiss S16 50mm lens on a 35mm film camera, but be careful to test things first!
