I was checking the image circle coverage of wide angle lenses In Duclos´list. Beyond, let´s say, 18mm, almost no one (only exception MP?) will cover future Red S35 sensor of 33+ mm diameter. I was evaluating the purchase of a Zeiss/Arri 14mm f/1.8 T2 Distagon but apparently covers only a 31mm diameter... is this the case? Is there some more slightly lower-quality coverage beyond the listed 31mm, or we just get ugly black vignetting?
Would appreciate info on this...
Thanks,
Guido

The image circle "limit" varies. Some lenses have a sharp cutoff that will give you a "ugly black vignette", and some will taper off slowly. It really depends on the lens and how the manufacturer designed it. For example, the RED pro primes have a very sharp light falloff. The illumination is consistent all the way to the edge of the image circle, and then cuts off completely with almost no tapering.

Thanks for your reply, Matt. Looks like many, many 35mm lenses, especially wide angles and zooms at the wide end, will be hardly usable with the new Red S35 sensor... which is a couple of mms. wider than film s35. I mean... is this necessary? Better sensor resolution can´t be increased by means of a denser count of more, smaller pixels instead of increasing the size of the entire sensor... even if it takes more time to develop? Just a doubt...

It has been said, I believe, that you can window to traditional S35, thus rendering the issue of coverage beyond S35 moot.
