Hello all,

I need to buy or rent a PL wide angle zoom for a production I'm overseeing. We plan to do a lot of steadicam work filming chase scenes up in the mountains, so we need something in the mid 10's to low 40's (that is mm, as in 15-40mm). We also need to shoot a fair amount underwater and if said zoom could approach the 90 degrees angle of view on a RED sensor, that would be perfect. I've looked at both the Cooke and Angenieux 15-40 zooms, but I don't think they are anywhere near as wide as 90 degrees at 15mm, anybody has any experience with them, what are the angles of view I can realistically expect on camera, not as per manufacturer specs? Any other high quality zooms out there besides these two that I don't know of? I've been saying for years that where the optics industry falls short is in wide angle zooms and now it seems I'm experiencing just that problem...

Probably not exactly what you are looking for, but this lens looks amazing!

Also consider the the Master Zoom (14.5-45). It is pretty nice!

Dylan,

Have you seen the Hawk lens in action yourself? I've heard about it from several sources, from it looking amazing to not even being in production yet so I don't know what to make of it...

Rudi,
The last time I was in Weiden I had the Hawk 10-24mm on my Red. It´s a fantastic lens. Sharp from edge to edge wide open, very little distortion even at 10mm. You should contact Peter Märtin from Vantage to dicuss further details and where it´s available now. He´s a very nice guy who loves doing the nearly impossible (like JJ).
Cheers,
Marc

Thanks Marc, I'll look into it.

That 10-24mm looks perfect for us underwater guys. Does anyone know a price and availability?

I will try to contact them but wondered if anybody had some ballpark info?

PS EDIT

I guess we got into this back in september, I think this is Rudi's post on the 10-24: (from another thread)

"I was offered a test with it a few months ago, but since it was to be put inside an underwater housing that I myself was testing, I passed on the opportunity, what with the $70K price tag. We were testing a double lock seal on the dome to housing connection to 13 atm (120 meters/400 feet) and that dive was long and complex enough to complete without throwing in a test for a wide zoom that I couldn't even test properly since I had no focus or zoom gears. In hindsight, I regret having passed on the opportunity but then a few weeks later I saw some test images of that same lens against a Canon 10-22mm still lens and, forgive me lord for the sin I'm about to commit, the Canon looked considerably sharper edge to edge projected on a big screen....go figure..."

I used the lens 2 years ago it's not a fake mockup at all. I had a camera Package rented from Vantage in Prague with all Angenieux Zooms and Cooke primes and they threw the 10-24 and the 150-450 into the package so I can try them out.
It's been a sucessfull tactic since I've requested the lenses on some jobs later.

It's rectilinear. They do sell them, contact them for a quote. They don't publish prices but it's in the 50K Euro range.

So does anybody have any updated opinions? It's t2.5 so a little faster than the canon and constant aperture, but Tamron now has an 11-16 zoom in Nikon and Canon slr mounts.

Yeah, well, I was later told that the footage I thought was from the 10-24mm was actually not, it apparently came from a Sigma zoom, so I still don't have a reference point as far as image quality goes for this lens, but, provided it is sharp and relatively distortion free, 70K is not excessive, although with that money I could probably buy an Arri 8, 10 and 12mm ultra primes...so..........

Oh man, so is this just an urban legend, that the 10-22 schooled the Hawk 10-24? :detective2:
