Wide angle lenses for RED Raven

Hi all,

I'm currently waiting for my camera (TS: 20th May 2016) and I was wondering what wide angle lens to use with the Raven, and I consider the following wide angle lenses:

Zeiss 15mm f/2.8
Canon 16-35mm II f/2.8
Sigma Art 18-35mm f/1.8

The price for the Zeiss 15mm is a bit high compared to the other two lenses but I would like to hear your opinion on what wide angle lens you might prefer.

Tokina 11-16 cine version, then sigma 18-35 cine version. Great combo

Canon stills and CN-E glass tends to be a bit too warm and soft for my liking. The Zeiss 15mm is up there with one the best wide angle lenses we've ever used - especially the cine-modded version from Lockcircle!!!!!! Of course Sigma Art glass is very nice as well and the 18-35 is a nice zoom lens for the cash.

Personally, unless you need a wide zoom, Id go with the Zeiss. In fact, most of the lenses we use are Zeiss cinemod sets from both Duclos and Lockcircle. The ZF glass can be modded with perm EF mounts and is the IDENTICAL glass used in the CP.2 cine lenses.

Sigma 18-35 Art is the bomb. Used all the other glass but this has come to be my favorite for size, flexibility and image quality.

Agree with you Levi. I have tried other still lenses and came back to the 18-35... plus picked up the 50-100 alongside of it.

It kinda depends on what you mean by "wide angle" , but I think given the slightly cropped nature of the Raven's sensor at 4.5k (2.4:1) and the even more cropped 4k (16:9), lenses like you mentioned will not really be that wide. The Sigma 13-35 is a great lens for the Raven, and I would definitely recommend it, but if you really want something wide then the Tokina 11-16mm (mentioned above by Domenic) or the Sigma or Canon 10-20mm would be more what you're looking for. I think the Tokina in either the cinema version or much cheaper photo version is probably the better lens.

You probably don't need it on Raven, given the smaller sensor size, but the Canon 11-24 works great on VV at 11mm. (8K HD / 7680 wide) For full 8K on VV (8192 wide), 12mm is about as low as you can go.

Don't forget the often forgotten and underrated Sigma 8-16mm non fisheye. Its APS-C designed but it works perfect on Helium at 5K, 4K for those needed High Speed Shots. If Raven is a 2X full frame crop, then this lens is the equivalent of a 16mm 4.5 .

Jonathan, how do you like that pogo cable from Came? Did you happen to try the WC version and can say a word comparing the 2? Flexibility and robustness/reliability impression? Also, where did you buy it?

Has anyone tried the Tokina 12-28mm? It looks like a winner over the Tokina 11-20mm to me.

It's a slower f4, whereas the 11-16 and 11-20 are f2.8.

Speaking of which, I have the 11-20. It's okay for those rare shots where my Sigma 18-35 can't get wide enough, but it's not exactly ideal.

I have found plenty of chromatic aberration in the Tokina 11-16 around 11-12 and full open. My lens is the Canon still version though. What's your experience with the Tokina cine version?

The Cable is great. Use it all the time on both shoulderrig and Ronin-MX. I haven't tried the WC cable, but it looks more flexiable than the one from Came-Tv. I got it together with the cage they make and I don't think they sell it
