There's definitely a case to be made that this is all rapidly approaching overkill (cf. the fact that most films go thru a 2K DI instead of the 4K big brother unless they're very effects heavy).

Anybody read anything about the, uh, adult entertainment industry going HD? After a few excited weeks (and this is all anecdotal, of course:whistling stuff started coming out of the cutting room in HD. Everybody kinda looked at it and went "Eeeewwww... I don't know if I need to see that."

Are there many PL cine lenses that can resolve to over 200 lines per millimetre right into the corners of the full s35 frames size?

My guess is that the Epic will out perform most lenses that get put in front of it and any 8K camera will be starving to death for resolution from any lens in general use.

Neither Epic, nor Scarlet is here to replace Red One. Jim and other RED-TEAM members have clearly pointed out that Red One will continue to be improved, upgraded and supported for some time to come... Each camera represents different market:

EPIC: 5K CMOS for crisp 4K RGB delivery with S35mm sensor and interchangeable lenses - to battle 65mm and high-end 35mm film productions...

Red One: 4K CMOS for crisp 2K/HD RGB delivery with S35mm sensor and interchangeable lenses (that could be delivered as "soft" 4K) - to battle average 35mm film productions...

Scarlet: 3K CMOS for crisp 2K/HD RGB delivery with 2/3" sensor and fixed lens - to battle low-cost 35mm, HD and S16mm independent film (and video) productions...

Three very different markets...

Now I bet You RED is already thinking about the next step - another camera - why?

I wager they'll do something stereoscopic once Jim Cameron's Avatar rips blockbuster movies a 3D butt hole.

Jim C reckons 4k is overkill I read somewhere, but I am keen to see his take on 3D cinema. Although even the polarized glasses make my eyes water...

I'm happy with my system. It will be the last camera I buy for quite some time. When thats done it will be used as a door stop in my beach front bar. Just hidden by the shadow of that Palm tree that holds up my hammock.

Actually my military experience has nothing to do with colors - if anything it would have the opposite effect and all my post would try to "blend in" as much as possible... :biggrin:

I'm technical & creative director for DERYL Group and the principal DOP there and I found using color when explaining both creative and technical issues to my team-mates makes life that much more easier. I damn to hell all the "standard" whiteboards that comes with black, red and blue markers.

I can't believe we have spent the last 10 years going through the digital transition and these issues are even worth bringing up. I can sum it up in five words: It's all about the acquisition. You've been watching dvd's for years. Did they shoot them on mp2's? When will the world regain balance and this issue be laid to rest as it should have been years ago...

I miss the old 70mm days. I think the last new release I saw in 70mm was Titanic at the Mann's Chinese. It looked amazing, way better than the 35mm version. Seeing Lawrence of Arabia and Apocalypse Now in 70mm at the Cinerama Dome were 2 of the greatest movie going experiences of my life. Anyway, 5k will only be good for IMAX until they up the resolution on digital projectors, or start printing 70mm again.

The 5k Mysterium X which is at the heart of Epic is going to be an upgrade to Red next summer so Red will have more rez and more dynamic range. Red will then be a true 4k. Epic is likely to have a more powerful FPGA along with the lighter body and wireless control.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Jim (or someone else at RED) said the Red One sensor upgrade will be the same resolution as the current sensor, but with better dynamic range.
