  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why you should buy the Scarlet S35 for full price

I don't get it. Why would S35 Scarlet boot in seconds, but FF35 takes a 60 seconds? That doesn't sound right to me.

Hi Tom,

Crossed wires, my fault, the "Clasic" RED One has the slow boot time, the new Epics & Scarlets have the 2 second boot times.

Jannard is a genius. He's built a camera that has sold more than any other high-end cine camera in history and now he's found a way to double those numbers.

Keep your R1, add a Scarlet (F35 or FF35) while you wait for your Epic. That way you have two bodies and the value of your R1 is 100% protected while you work to pay for the next round.

The man's brilliant. The true win/win.

Even if in the brochure both FF35 are plan for winter 2009 before S35 wich are plan for summer/fall 2009 ?

Scarlet ships before Epic.

S35 ships before FF35.

Scarlet S35 = spring/summer 2009 (est.)

In my mind ... spring = NAB, summer = June, July, August

Scarlet FF35 = winter 2009 (est.)

In my mind ... winter = November, December

slightest delay on Monstro sensor and you are 2010 ...

Personally ... I hope lots of people sit on the fence ... while I shoot movies with the DSMC system!!

IMO - jump into the DSMC with SCARLET S35 - full price.

Hold back your credit for EPIC upgrade.

If you are torn over choices here ... be glad you have choices.

Has Arri or Sony published their roadmap yet ...?

I'll upgrade R1 to MX and get very advanced camera system that can compete with EPIC S35.

No comment about the state of my R1 today because the most people here know that.

Also Scarlet S35 is an attractive option as a companion to the system I'll plan.

"Once any of the above has been chosen, the serial number will be marked as "Executed". It can not be used again for #2 or #3. It can, however, always be eligible for another sensor upgrade as we release new sensor technology in the future."

Am I right in assuming that one could choose option #3, and then option #1 as well?

No you can not. Look at Jim's own words you quoted. "Once any of the above has been chosen, the serial number will be marked as "Executed". It can not be used again..."

You can pick option 1, 2 or 3. but not more than one of those options.

Right. My advice was stemming from the concept that according to the brochure - the Scarlet S35 is first out of the gate - spring/summer 2009 est.

I would expect many RED ONE owners would like to buy that camera ASAP (I do) - have it + their Red One - and save the credit towards an Epic S35 OR FF35 when that is available.

Keep in mind that in addition to legitimate overcranking ability and the ability to fully utilize FF35mm glass, FF35 will also have 2+ stops better DR and 16bit vs 12bit for S35. That could be huge.

The exact words were

"It can not be used again for #2 or #3. It can, however, always be eligible for another sensor upgrade as we release new sensor technology in the future."

That is why I am wondering if you can take the 12% discount on a Scarlet and then also pay for a sensor upgrade for your Red One.

Jim?

You will always be able to purchase upgrades for the RED One, as long as they still support the camera. I'm wondering if RED may offer a discount on the Mysterium-X upgrade for the RED One if that is the chosen upgrade path vs. trading the camera in toward EPIC or taking a discount off of Scarlet?

@ Sanjin,

Jim said somewhere a while back (Monstro thread, I think) that the RED One would stay 4K when the Monstro upgrade arrives. That implies that the Monstro upgrade would still be an S35mm sensor in the RED One. And that would make the most sense. That could also be a big reason why we don't see a S35mm Monstro EPIC on the table.

How about if I just buy one of every new Red camera I can possibly get from Red and start selling them off when I don't need them. Is that a good plan?

In other words when new Red cameras start meeting demand with supply, we will have a dilemma. Until then, all of them are a good investment when rental and resale value is considered. We're in the middle of a Red camera demand deluge and the FUD that surrounded Red One no longer exists. You don't have to make a decision, you can buy the cameras that are available with the funds available to you and sell them at the point that an upgrade is available. Oh and the 12% discount is one day of rental on a full package, perhaps less.

At times like these I turn to the great lyricist Slug who spat: "I feel like a legend on a leash making an effort to break every piece that I can reach"
He wasn't rhyming about cameras but the basic principle holds.

Does anyone even know if our R1 serial numbers apply if we DON'T use our upgrade?
I'd assumed I'd have one chance to use my number and If I didn't want a Scarlet at 12% off I had to wait for the camera I did want (Epic X). What Mark is implying is that I'll have the chance to buy my serial number in Scarlet and Epic, is that correct? If so do I get a crack at each model or just one of each series?

I never took it that way... you just get one opportunity to apply your serial number discount, however you choose to use it. Once you use it, it's been applied and you can't use it again. But you could certainly pay full price for a scarlet and save your discount for later.

Hi,

As many people seem very happy with the images from a R1 I don't believe the pent up frustration for low cost quality will repeat itself in quite the same way, OK the rental costs of a Scarlet will be 1/2 the price of a RED one. What does a RED one rent for today with about 5000 cameras in the field.

I have yet to find a producer who wants to pay more than he did last year.

But could you use your place in line more than once, with or without your discount?
