I bought a Bircher Canon EOS Lens system for my Red, only days before the announcement by Red that it would no longer offer a warranty with the Red should you replace the Red lens mount with the Bircher.

Even though I am covered by the Red warranty, I am reluctant to install the Bircher mount because there must be a reason why Red stopped supporting it. Does anyone know? Bircher won't tell me, and neither will Red? If I just got a straight forward reason as to why, I will be able to make a more informed decision. Any help would be appreciate.

If we dont have that piece of paper with your name at RED your warranty will be void if you install the mount.

Don't worry there isn't some new technical issue that has ended the warranty agreement ( at least that we know about ), the mount at this time is just alot different than the mount it was when we made the agreement and politically there just seemed to always be friction so it wasn't worth us putting forth the continued effort to support.

here ya go....

Have a look at the Birger thread and you just might find out by reading between the lines

Makes sense that pouring museli (bircher) into the mount would void the warranty.

I poured corn flakes into mine, and while it did seem to improve the image quality for a few seconds, the resulting smoke blocked the frame and the camera didn't turn on again after that...

I was pretty upset that Red didn't ship and fix my camera for free.
After all, shouldn't they be responsible for everything I do since I was kind enough to buy their camera? :sarcasm:

In all seriousness though, the Birger situation is unfortunate and frustrating.

I was in a similar situation when I first got my camera with the MUSE mount. I had the mount and a full set of Canon FD lenses, only to find out it would void my warranty! Never put it on, thank God, and found a buyer that was willing to take it, with the full knowledge about the warranty. Wasn't about to just pass on that problem to someone unaware...

I doubt if you will get a straight answer for quite awhile, but there is nothing particularly dangerous about installing or using a Birger mount so if you are one of the lucky ones that got in before the change, you should just install it and enjoy the most useful and cost effective accessory ever made for the REDONE. (It is not only a smart mount for EF lenses but a nice dumb mount for Nikon, Contax/Yashica, Leica, M42 and other still camera lenses - something not possible with the approved Nikon mounts due to the Flange focal distance being too long.)

I must have missed something! So does the Birger (that is what is being talked about?) now void the warranty? I thought it was approved. Hope so, or i had better start saving up for the non-trade-in upgrade for my R1!

Scott: If you bought and registered before the cutoff date (Nov30?) you are okay.

I'm pretty sure corn flakes are approved as long as you don't mix it with milk and honey. This is what you might have done wrong. But, you are absolutely right, musli is not approved. Pour it at your own risk.

Sorry, Christmas time ;-)

I use oatmeal, it gives an interesting granular texture to the picture with a more "organic" feel than the harsh "mechanical" feel of traditional filters from tiffen, schneider, etc.

Call Red, explain your story and ask if you're covered. If they say no, you can't expect an explanation because there may be legal issues that they are being careful to avoid.

Is there any way to tell whether any particular mount, in this case Birger, has been installed on your camera after you've taken it off and put the PL mount back on? Or is this whole warranty issue based on the honor system, spies and confession?

Red have said they can tell as there are signatures or clues each mount will leave on the camera when installed, that they can see.

I would never try to pull one over on them anyway, after everything they have done for the community.

It's one of those sucky situations we get caught up in once in a while.

Not that I want to incite criminal activity, I just would love to know why this mount wasn't approved? Was it merely to eliminate competition for future products or was there a good engineering / safety reason? To follow edicts (that have no reasonable justification) sounds less communal than religious. Is to sink in a considerable investment and be told you can't use it with a particular piece of gear without a reasonable explanation any more ethical than using said gear and not reporting it? Are lens mount "fingerprints" fact or fiction? Can anyone tell? As far as I can see, my old Underdahl mount or new Pro Lock leave no tell tale signs.

As for a "sucky" situation, would it suck if you had a good reason as to why it can't be used? I've read between the lines and haven't found squat. I heard somewhat reasonable explanations for the IMS ban. What can I say, when you buy a camera, you get excited about cool 3rd party accessories. Birger was perhaps the coolest, opening up the RED to the wonderful world of Canon.

Any other smart Canon mount on the horizon?

That's really funny. LOL

You Guys!!!!

Of course I meant Birger...silly me!!
I actually received the BIRGER mount before I collected my camera, and it was inbetween that time that I found out about the warranty issues.

I am happy to report that my paperwork was submitted in time, and I am covered by the warranty....but because of this, the BIRGER mount has remained in it's packaging....unopened....and...unloved.

And because of this, I made the mistake of calling it Bircher....cause it was packed away....unseen....and....unloved.

But, I do plan one day to try it out.....but not until I am more comfortable with using the camera etc.

So....for all of you concerned....no breakfast cereals were harmed during the purchase of my BIRGER mount. Thanks for the feedback though. I look forward to learning more about any legal battles in the future....while I continue to wait for my EVF, ordered and paid for months ago.....
