  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why the RED RAID should have a SATA port...

That's because you're pulling more power from the computer than FW800 is rated for and the drives start getting choked for power each time it starts doing reads/writes which take more power than idling.

Makes sense...
But why have the second port at all if they can't be used to daisy chain them?
I must be missing something.

Greg

You can daisy chain firewire data without overdrawing the power assuming your additional drive is self-powered (eg. does not draw from the firewire port power).

You can power the second drive externally or
plug in a CF reader.

Or you can use multiple low power devices like CF readers.

eSATA might be great, but...
I use the same setup as Ariana. Express Card e-SATA to two backup drives, Red Raid on the FW 800. Goes fast. FW 800 is not the bottleneck. The bottleneck is making and checking checksums (which in my opinion is necessary so there's no way around it)
A good AC and DIT team will find a moment late in the day (setting up the product shot on a commercial, turnaround for the last CU of a scene or a quick insert shot on a movie or episodic) and do a quick reload. While the first team works on the last shot of the day, the DIT is transferring the last of 90% of the day's footage. Then, whomever has to "wait" for the drive at the end of the day only has a short wait (perhaps 5-10 minutes of footage to transfer and check) Should not take any longer than the camera team putting the camera to bed, or the G&E team packing the grip truck.
And on most "pro" shoots, it's not the director or producer standing around waiting, but the PA who is taking one of the drives to the editor or the colorist for work (in the morning) The director has gone home, as has the producer (or he's taking the client out for drinks on a commercial)
That's in my world, anyway...
Cheers,
Harry

Dane,
Good point.
On those two-camera shoots, have you tried to convince production to buy 4 drives instead of two? This way each camera gets its own pair of backup drives. With two laptops, two eSATA Express Card adapters and cables, you could wrangle both cameras at once.
The cost of more hardware would likely be cheaper than crew and stage OT.
But yes, multi-camera shoots present a data challenge.
Can't wait until someone in NY or LA has to organize one of those 15-camera concert videos with Red Ones. Should be fun! Instead of a room full of loaders sweating in black bags, we'll have a room full of computer geeks sweating checksums! ;)
Cheers,
Harry

That's the problem for me. Both drives are self powered and I'm still having issues with the second drive not mounting.

(Sorry not trying to hijack this thread and turn it into a firewire discussion.):innocent:

Is there such a thing a as a FW800 hub? I've used them for FW400 but can't seem to locate one for FW800.
If there is no speed benefit to eSata and connectivity is an issue then this would seem to solve it.

??

Greg

I do not know about that specifically, but I have seen an express card adapter that will allow 2 FW800 connections. So then you could have 3 FW800 from one laptop (Macbook Pro at least.)

I use a dual port esata expresscard for my backup drives and use the onboard firewire for the red disks. goes quite fast :)

What setup do you have / are you using- I have tried two Express card eSata adapters with my MacBook Pro, and neither of them have worked?

I got my expresscard adapter at the apple store.

I have not tried a fw800 one but i've heard that works well too.

Not sure which card(s) they sell at the Apple Store, but...

The Sonnet card works well and it has two SATA ports. The CalDigit cards work great, but only have a single port.

i have the sonnet card--using it right now actually. Hey Jeff--do you ever get the black screen of death when you insert the sonnet card? i periodically get it but haven't been able to figure out why or how to avoid it. not a big problem, i just reboot and then go--and once it's in it works great. speedy.

I actually don't own the Sonnet card myself, but have used it. I have the CalDigit one and no problems at all with that one. Not sure about the black screen issue, could be a static discharge problem?

I know a few redusers have the Sonnet card. There was a thread a while back on SATA cards, but it may be a good topic to re-visit now.

Thanks for your answers and help. I'll look around and see if I can find that thread.
