I, like many around here, have been following the Red movement, from the Red One, the Scarlet and Epic, since the beginning. I was part of the majority that couldn't afford the Red One, but was 100% behind the philosophy of the company. Have posted little troughout the years, sometimes even insulted by Red One owners by my comments in some threads. I didn't have the camera, but posted my opinions, always trying to see if we could one day get something similar to what we got November 3rd: the S35 Scarlet.
What Red has done was to truly democratize high end filmmaking with the Scarlet. This is a S35 Red camera that actually OUTPERFORMS the Red one in pure cinema terms: it has better compression at 4K, a much more user friendly form factor, an indie friendly still camera mount, faster bootup time, possibility to use indie friendly support gear, all this at bellow the price of a... Cinema Zoom Lens. It is obviously much expensive than an AF100, FS100, 7D or 5D, but this is a CINEMA CAMERA- the real deal. A camera capable of imagery such as "CHE" " Contagion" even " Pirates of the Caribbean 4". Everyone, for the price bellow of a Sony F3, can have this capability. Red actually provides everyone with a CHOICE- you don't "need" to have the 14K package. You can get the 10K canon mount package EDIT, add a couple of 64GP SSD's (about 2K extra) END OF EDIT and then get an anton bauer brick/belt, get a cheap hd SDI lcd, cheap rails, a Zacuto Viewfinder if you want an option different from the Bomb, etc. You can make a ready to shoot Scarlet CHEAPER than 14K. This camera is about OPTIONS, and its brilliant.
This camera will empower a new generation of filmmakers. It will not rent very expensive for the quality it provides to those that can't afford the 14K. This camera is PURCHASEABLE, achievable. When in the history of filmmaking could an Indie be able to afford big blockbuster capable cameras? This is that moment.
And lets not forget what RED is. For those of us following RED throughout the years, we saw how the Red One started and how it is today: it is a completely different animal: faster frame rates, better redcode, BETTER SENSOR, Free software, excellent costumer support, support for users who had their cameras STOLEN- What camera manufacturer gives you the ease of mind that if your camera gets stolen, no one else will get the benefit of using it by BLOCKING ITS UPDATES? - and of course the RED COMMUNITY. I'm about to shoot an important project soon (The Macau Grand Prix). I wanted desperately to shoot it with a DSMC, and I got immediate response from a fellow red user that was willing to support me with his Epic M. This is a community, a great community and network of guerrilla, forward thinking filmmakers. By getting a Scarlet, you're getting in on this excellent community. I hope sincerely current redusers will accept and support the new generation of Scarleteers just like they support each other!
And it will only get better. Red is not a corporate structure like every single camera manufacturer out there: its a company with real people, people that listens. I've posted here numerous times, Jim, Jarred and the rest of the team actually listen. Many developments of the cameras come from "our" contribution over here. This is amazing. These products were tailor made with our input and their genius. Nothing else compares. I'm absolutely sure the Scarlet will only get better in time, and- excluding for the sensor upgrade- will be FREE (I hope for a 3k 50P and 2K 100fps upgrade which would help immensely my storytelling style and visuals- I'm really hopeful the Red Team will make it happen eventually
). I have to say it once again: Thank you Jim, Jarred, Graeme, everyone from Red from the top to the excellent costumer support and, of course, this excellent forum. Thank You. Once I get my Scarlet ( Or Epic, lets see about stage 4) I make myself a commitment to give and dedicate to you guys my first short film in these streets, you who made it possible . The Scarlet is a dream come true for me. Now, its time to make some kick ass movies, visuals that will shake the industry. No more excuses for not making it happen!
