Why only a six month warranty

Yes, two years is minimum legal throughout the EU.
Of course that doesn't apply if you buy RED in the USA. However if you import a RED and resell it (as a business) in the EU you will have to provide this warranty.

This provision is a protection for consumer goods. Its not applicable to professional ones.

For years Sony offered 3 months on their Betacam cameras - this is back in the '80 and early '90. Then, they were forced to extend it to 1 year by customers' pressure. 6 months on Red seems rather short and I would hope that it's a mistake that will be corrected.

Jim has always been good with his customers and I doubt that any Red Owner will have a great deal to worry about. Customer intergration is such a big part of Red that any issue left unresolved by the company would soon eminate to the cinematography community and impact on it's reputation, I doubt Jim for one would let that happen.

That being said I think a 12 month warranty is fairly normal these days and I'm suprised it's been changed to 6. A short warranty implies an expectance that anything longer could be considered costly to the company - that doesn't bode well for prospective buyers. Like others have said it's certainly something that would be used as ammunition for the competition. I'm not sure why Red has these strange T&C's that seem to be there to combat resale of their equipment rather than aid their customers and offer reassurance.

What a storm this has stirred!

c'mon guys - it's a $250,000 camera for $20 grand! let them make a few bucks from service of the unit if you drop it in a puddle or for some weird reason the CPU fan stops working after 6 months!

Although I can see the Sony slanderwagon going now....for the single reason of keeping the dogs off your back I would make it
"industry standard" you don't want all this negative press...

One thing's for sure obin, you are not in charge of quality control.
250,000 used to buy a lot less than it did for a reason. Thats what technology improvements are all about. Just because something is less expensive than it used to be means I've got to pay extra to service it? Not following you at all.
Also, I'm not sure if you've considered the implications of servicing.....you'll most likely need to ship it to california on your own dime. The warranty rules aren't talking about a few bucks, but many bucks, and a lot of time waiting due to aforementioned shipping to california factory.
Puddle dropping aside. No warranty covers puddle dropping.
But CPU fans, sensors, and the rest of the shebang absolutely.

Irrelevant. The camera should still come with a 1 year warranty which is pretty standard with a lot of products.

Panasonic has a 5 year warranty with their new cameras.

Please stop with the "it's a 250K camera for 20K" thing.
Most pros here will easily invest around 50K in a RED package, tripod and mattebox not included.
It's still a lot of money and every pro gear I own has at least a warranty for a year. Think about a good car for a second. 1 year is the minimum.

The thing that bothers me the most is the loss of warranty if you want or have to sell your RED. It's not normal that a warranty only stays with the original buyer. I don't understand this.

Please enlight me guys
Cheers
Tim

Well, thats not a nice prelude is it...starts to sound like the Future Shop experience. I'm not into being sold extended warranties...of course, this is speculation on your part number6. However, I'm hard pressed to understand a 6 month warranty under any circumstance. I'm not into 'hoping' they'll warranty the drivetrain and engine. They've already 'lowered' their warranty by half. This is also unusual. Wonder if someone from Red can input on this.

I wasn't defending them. I NEVER buy an extended warranty.

Really strange I asked about the warranty to Mr Schilovitz at IBC this year, and he answered to me one year! Like my question was a bit stupid.
Guys you shoudn't beeing to worried.
Just my two cents
Brice

hmm.. six month warranty. That doesn't sound good to me.

The RED is still arguably an experimental system, with new features being enabled, firmware upgrades etc. Are RED so sure that they will have worked out the bugs in 6 months? I don't think early adopters would appreciate their warranty running out before all the features are fully enabled.

I hope we get some feedback direct from RED on this.

Since this was changed recently, I'm wondering if those who have ordered prior to that change will still have a one-year warranty, while anyone buying the camera after this was posted will be afforded only a 6 month warranty?

If so, then maybe that will teach them a lesson about waiting!

Please, guys. Red is a camera vendor not a religion! You are about to pay them lots of cash for a camera / software system thats new and unproven. Don't be shy about asking for a 1yr. warranty and reasonable repair and resale policies. They will look out for Red, you need to look out for yourself.

It would be nice if someone from RED can chime in on this.

But what concerns me too is the shipping back to California on your own dime, if there's something wrong... If I'm correct, Jim said there would be support for RED in PRague too, what would be a lot less costly then shipping to California for us in europe...

Well put Matt. RED is a business and we are customers; although sometimes their actions are above and beyond the call of duty, like the new daughter board currently being fitted, which really impressed me..

As far as sending back to RED goes. If there is a fault under warranty, then RED should cover the shipping costs, especially if it arrives faulty. We are buying over the internet, so I wonder if special laws apply?

Anyway, we all hope that nothing will ever go wrong eh :)

Looks like it is RED lawyer talking here, someone from management has to take a look on this T&Cs. Yes the same thing here, I have heard that warranty will be one year (subject to changes) and that free firmware upgrade will be for life.

(subject to the changes)

The true is that most of these cameras will get 10 years of use in the first 6 months of abuse but IMHO except for the rentals the camera should have standard 1 Year warranty.

Let's appeal to RED's pride:

"C'mon, guys, yer not gonna ship a product with a worse warranty than Panasonic, are ya?"

Did you read what Jim said on the boards about "lifetime software upgrades for free" :)

Ok, so one year is better then 6months, and 20k is better then 250K but lets all just take a breath and say "I am very thankful that RED is building a camera system" think about what the options are.....?

Maybe some of you would like me to buy you a camera?? I mean, lets give some RED slack, deal???

A six month warranty seems out-of-synch with Red's super-service attitude. I would like to see a 1 year warranty. I don't expect a gift, just a little insurance before it's all on me. Could someone from Red please comment?

This is what RED site says:

"5a. Standard Warranty – A Standard Warranty is granted to the original purchaser for a period of one (1) year, parts and labor, for the camera and camera accessories excluding Digital Media and Batteries. Standard Warranty for Digital Media is ninety (90) days. Standard Warranty for Batteries is ninety (90) days or charge cycles of less than 400, whichever comes first. The Standard Warranty covers parts and labor charges for products that have been returned pre-paid shipment to an Authorized Service Center. All warranty returns shall be done in accordance with Red’s warranty return merchandise authorization (“WMA”) policy, a copy of which is set forth in Section 6 (RETURNS) and is posted on Red’s website. Any repaired or replaced product shall be warranted as set forth in this section for a period the greater of (i) the balance of the applicable warranty period relating to such product or (ii) ninety (90) days after it is received by Buyer. Only the components that were repaired or replaced will be eligible for the 90-day period set forth in paragraph 5a (ii)."

I don't see 6 month...please correct me if I'm wrong.
