  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why only 30 fps????

Deanan: Why there's no 4K in the Scarlet S35? I am wondering this in a Post workflow. The Scarlet is perfect as a B Cam, but in Post we need to downscale the Scarlet footage to match it with the Red1!!!! Do we need a additional Step in post to match the frame size? I would Love to able to use BOTH cameras footage in a edit without having to do any scaling!!!
 
I don't get it. If you want high frame rates, get the 2/3" Scarlet. If you want 35mm DoF for cheap, get the S35 Scarlet. If you want both, splurge for the Epic, or get both a 2/3" Scarlet and an S35 Scarlet. What's the problem?
 
Call me ignorant or slow, but I still don't get why the "bigger" scarlets only achieve half the framerate at 2K that the 2/3-model gets at 3K...:wacko: I mean, isn't the amount of data (at least across the Scarlet mx-Models with the same bit-depth) independent from sensor size, but only dependent on resolution, frame rate and bit-depth?
But then 3K@12bit@120fps should be a lot more data to handle than 2K@12bit@60fps – why is that? Why is the smaller (as in "cheaper") 2/3" more capable than the more expensive S35 in this respect?

I really don't want to accuse or whine, but I'm curious.:detective2:

3K data processing requirements are identical regardless of the source chip. One would therefore imagine the frame-rate limitations at S35 and FF35 and 3K have to do with sensor cooling.
 
By the way, how about

5k / 30 fps
2k / 60 fps
1k / 120 fps

????

It may also be sensor *clock*. If the sensor has to refresh at a higher speed, it costs more. Limiting Scarlet's sensors to 60fps probably keeps costs down and yields up.
 
Are you sure that these cheap HD cameras will do 60fps? Or do they simply support 1080/60p output via an HDMI connector. I suppose it is one and the same if you are using an external system to capture the video via the HDMI connector, but not too many **cheap** HD cameras that I'm aware of will actually print to "tape" at 60fps.
 
Guys, for twenty years if we wanted to shoot a sync job on 35mm film and shoot 50fps slow motion we needed to rent two bodies (a sync sound Panaflex G2 and a high speed arri 435 or Panastar) - Until the Millennium or moviecam came out a couple of years ago those were our only options.

Are you saying I've never shot high speed and sync footage with one camera, an Arri 535? Interesting.

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure I've shot slow mo with an Arri 35BL as well. Heavy SOB.
 
Regarding bandwidth of data from a sensor, it is probably the nr. of pixels x fps that counts.

And note, a 5k sensor has 2.8 times more pixels than a 3k sensor, so nr. of pixels doesn't depend linearly on frame width (~5k=5k x 2.5 k=12.5 MP, ~3k=3k x 1.5k = 4.5 MP).

In general, power consumption scales with bandwidth (think 'overclocking your computer needs more cooling'), so it could well be that the (chosen!) size of those universal 'brain'-blocks is limiting cooling and thus fps.

I think all these decisions are guided by the engineering and physics, either no 'universal brick' approach and high fps for a 5k Scarlet, or a 'universal brick' approach with fps limitations...

Just my 2 cents as an engineer...
 
They are different architectures and analogies don't translate perfectly as Scarlet has a range of processing power (for 3k, 5k , 6k).
When you look at the bigger picture, REDone has more flexible processing power and brute force because it's FPGA based while Scarlet FF35 has more efficiency/less flexibility.

Maybe I should have used the car engine analogy instead...

Or avoiding a car analogy... :D

Buses and cars are inefficient and slow but flexible.
Trains are efficient and fast but are restrained to defined routes.

then again... I guess the REDOne makes up for its slower less efficient FPGA with size... which would break that analogy. Caravan of buses!
 
As much as I like your analogy Gavin, this thread is really out of date, since all Scarlet models currently can do 120 fps.
 
frame rates cost money...

are all of them really 120fps?
