Jim is making a very thoughtful and smart decision in upgrading all the existing Red Ones first before upgrading the product that goes out the door. However, there are some very important downsides to this:

Here's why:

1. A company should never ship a product that needs to be sent straight back to the factory to be "fixed". It's just a bad policy from a customer perspective. Why send something to a customer only to have them send it right back to you.

2. It's bad for the Red Brand to be sending a new product out the door, when a used product out in the field is going to produce a better image.

3. If the Scarlet and Epic products are delayed even further, there is no new product that Red has to bridge the gap.

I think it's very smart to loyal to your existing customers, and by no means is the current policy a totally bad idea. However, it will have some negative impact on new customers.

exactly. As a customer you have the choice. Buy a R1 now use it as so many other have and are doing this very day to make great images. When the other people who have been doing that exact thing for a long time and have stuck with RED through the development of their platform get the opportunity to move forward, then you as well will move forward.

If don't want to buy a camera "just to send it back." Then wait till all existing owners have done the upgrade and then buy. You can have it shipped directly to you with the MX in it.

However any way you look at it. RED is doing a good job of being loyal and fair.

Ya I thought the MX upgrade was an option when you purchase your R1, either go without it, or pay the extra money and have it factory installed before they ship it.

Unless your referring to that if you bought a R1 today, you would have to wait until previous owners upgraded, so you would have to ship your R1 back to the factory after everyone else is done

I think they're viewing it as more modularity to the camera. They are upgrading existing camera first to keep the obsolesce obsolete promise they made back when. To new customers, not having to drop the extra dough up front ensures a wider market as well as placing it at a good price point between the Scarlet and Epic brains. Just my thoughts.

I'll be sending mine in for trade in as soon as it's possible to do so, and don't really care about the mx sensor in it. I just want my Epic and Scarlets. My Red one should arrive in the next week. Missed the good trade in deadline. Also trying to buy as little as possible to get a working camera.

red not beeing welfare...sorry couldnt resist
we should give jim a chance to pay graeme, brent, dan, alan p etc...and to get a fully functional selling (only assecoires)/repair/upgrade service center in good ol europe

It woud defeat the purpose of having a line up.

Not really, people have had the use of their R1's for 2 years & will get first stab at Epic. R1 will seem very old next to a camera that boot's in 2 seconds.

So, a new customer should get to jump in line in front of all current RED 1 owners just because they were fashionably late getting to the party? I don't think so.

R1 will seem very old next to a camera that boot's in 2 seconds.

Not really, R1 is not going to get obsolete soon even if it boots in 2 minutes instead of 2 seconds as it is "promised" for Epic/Scarlet.

Why?

1. It's a compact design and that fact would take some advantages especially for use at extreme climate conditions, both at hot and cold.

Why again?

2. A simple condensation in a hot and humid climates that can happen between the modular parts and freezing of non-heated modular parts

in a cold climates are less affected issues with a compact designed body than it is with a modular bodies.

Don't forget that R1 body is designed and built like an armoured fighting vehicle (AFV).

And again don't forget that R1 will get also the next sensor upgrade a.k.a. Monstro.

For sure, the red 1 with mx upgrade will not be obsolete for owner operators, but in terms of the dry hire market, 99% of people who don't own, will want to hire the Epic or Scarlet when they are available. Boot up time does matter.

I think the post implied that new R1's would ship with M-X. I could be wrong of course.

This is also plays into the "why upgrade now?" question...
and

Who would upgrade a n R1 if a new R1 shipped with M-X?
Who would upgrade an R1 if the EPIC is on schedule?

I'm pretty sure the rental market will take a hit, but it will still be possible to rent out the RED ONE. Sure - everyone wants to shoot with the new kid but not everyone can afford that - and the RED ONE will still be a very capable camera at an affordable price. So I'm guessing we'll still see a lot of lower budget productions shot on it.

From what I have seem MX is so much better than M, I can't see anybody bothering with M. Renting is so much more flexible when the product life cycle of equipment is 2 years.

A lot of productions are still shooting with Moviecam that's based on design started at 1976.

For example "White Ribbon/Das weiße Band" a film directed by Michael Haneke and shot by Christian Berger AAC

with MovieCam, won the Palme d'Or 2009 and the 2009 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

With digital is the same like with film,

it's not so about this or that camera it's about a sensor (film stock).

Long live M-X!

Probably upcoming Monstro sensor is going to "kill" the film stock as a movie acquisition format.

Available light situation with the high ISO 12800 @ T2.8 and you'll get noiseless moving images then you are ready to roll...

The reason people still use older film cameras is that they can still use the up to date stocks and lenses. Sure, the mx chip will be better than red 1. But epic will give you better frame rates and other things discussed already on this forum. Also will be smaller and lighter. Red is essentially, IMHO, a computer. Are people using computers made in 1976 ?

I know that you can use hot swap adaptors, but it means that you are keeping your camera powered up. So, you need to carry more batts, need to charge them up more as you are running them down more quickly, so their life span gets shorter, so you need to buy more batts or get the cells replaced more quickly and so on, and so on. Not so good for the environment to be replacing battery cells.
