Just thinking out loud here, RED has the resources and skill sets at RED to do it. I'm wondering why they don't have a feature exclusive to the RED Camera range similar to Kickstarter but more along the lines for funding projects slated for filming with RED Cinema Cameras? Some of the bigger names in Tinseltown are creating magic with RED product and they all need to raise budgets. I'm sure with the amount of dedicated users of RED products there would be a sense of 'unity' prevailing through a community that revolves around not just the hardware but also the artistry created with it. For many to be associated with projects created by some of the visionary filmmakers using RED products would extend that sense of 'family'.

In the cold light of day it could also be a lucrative addition to their revenue streams if they were to take similar cuts as per Kickstarter and other Crowdfunding platforms.

I think Red is more into the idea of selling a manufactured project than a service. For the same reason, they don't offer a post house and they don't offer a distribution service. They do have studio space in Hollywood, but I think part of that was just to establish a big LA presence (which worked out pretty well for them).

I think financing films is its own entity. Right now, I count at least 7 companies doing this:

https://www.slated.com
http://indiegogo.com
http://kickstarter.com
https://www.fundable.com
http://www.gofundme.com
http://seedandspark.com/
https://www.megafounder.com

And I'm sure I've left a few out.

Well it would be a thread for folks named Mark but the administration of the site couldn't be bothered to answer the many contact attempts made to report issues with the lost password recuperation protocol of the forum. But hey no worries, as long as folks get a kick out of sarcasm that's all that counts eh??

Excellent marketing idea Marc, as long as they attract the public to comes and pledge to keep viable . They could merely go to a existing company like kickstarter and get them to run it for them in the background.

Yeah I think so too. Maybe it would even benefit more the Indie crowd as the 'family vibe' from within the sense of community could lead to lower budget films being produced that would otherwise never have gotten off the ground. Low budget doesn't always mean no box office, Blair Witch Project was shot on US$60k and nailed the global box offices with a US$248m gross revenue for example. And to wrap up, if anything it would be a good move for RED insofar that they would be looking at potentially greater market share in the production World, always a good thing for a camera manufacturer.

Cheers,
Mark

Just the thought of Raven as an entry point, the marketing community sense is enough to attract people even if they don't intend to use it to crowd fund

and exponentially up through model hierarchy...
