  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why no Micro Four Thirds mount option for the EPIC ?

I think i did put a foot in my mouth and took a bite starting this thread... heh heh...

Hehe... That's just the direction the discussion has drifted. Anyway, I'm sure that there will be short FFD mount options, *IF* it is possible to mount anything that close to the sensor.

For now, the primary two are the micro 4/3rds system and the Sony E-Mount. Nikon has announced they're developing a mirrorless, short FFD system, but no specs have come forth since their announcement a few months back.

I think the real question here is just what the distance is from the sensor/OLPF block to the front mounting surface where the interchangeable mount flange attaches. If it's possible to attach a micro 4/3rds or similar short FFD mount, I'm sure someone will make one.

:) :) :)

Yeah...the real question...

Thanks for simplifying that Jeff !

Cheers!

Antoine,

i am happy I´ve got them. Together with the K35 zoom 25-120 they are a fabulous set. Soft on skin, but sharp from 1,5 on - I just love them. To replace them I´d have to buy Cooke or Leica = $$$$ out of my range.

Thanks Peter for your feedback!

Enjoy!

There was a comment a few days ago from one of the red team that Leica-M couldn't be mounted due to back flange limitations, which is ~ 27mm from memory. µ4/3 is ~20mm, so even more unlikely.

That may have more to do with the maximum width at the flange opening than depth. There may not be enough width available to recess the lens barrel or access lens controls.

The only brilliance of the M4/3 mount I can see is the omission of a reflex mirror in this camera class. You are able to get as close to the sensor as physically possible. You get adapters for almost any lens mount.

If PL, Nikon and Canon EF mounts on EPIC do not offer enough choices, you could always adapt other lenses to any of these. The only good glass you will not be able to use would be Leica M lenses.

(OEM M4/3 lenses, IMHO, do not warrant a special mount for EPIC.)

Peter,

M4/3 cameras have some fabulous zoom lenses like a Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 14-35mm f/2.0 and Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 35-100mm F/2.0 you can't find that fast and good at any other format or system.

Sanjin,

I have to agree with you, the lenses used in this footage look amazingly good in a TV sort of way. They may however be not a good choice on a professional camera like Epic or Scarlet: no mechanical way to set f-stops, probably no real zoom-through, build quality.
To use a reverse image: it would be like fitting a Porsche with a beetle engine.

Peter,

I haven't seen yet any digital camera that can metaphorically speaking be compared with Porsche Carrera 911.

Alexa is more like an Audi Q7, heavy, slow and expensive.

RED1 is more or less like a Hummer.

But there is one new camera from Panasonic, Lumix GH2 that could be easily compared with Porsche Boxter because it's a small, fast, easy of use,

can accept the most of good lenses (manual and AF), fits in your pocket and also your vallet, makes great photo and video images,...

This Boxter like GH2 is a great transition camera to Scarlet S35 that should be described as a Porsche Carrera 911.

LUMIX ON THE ROAD: Jean-Baptiste Lefournier does some really strange CC.
Besides that it clearly shows the limits of mediocre zooms.
I also watched his NYC clip, a pity that he did not use 30fps (flicker).
