  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why is the quickplate so expensive?

Is it me or is the RED Quickplate extraordinarily expensive at $500 compared to the battery plate at $175? It's basically just a plate with a hinge at $325. I'd imagine that the universal mount would be more expensive to produce - especially with those costly wing nuts on them. At $550 I can buy the Battery Plate and three Universal Mounts.

I'm just wondering, that's all.

I've attached the Battery plate to a Universal Mount for Steadicam mode. but you have to buy the custom Battery Plate Back from Element Technica. (Its not on their site...)

I just avoided that entire Cradle setup its too clunky

I was curious to know what it was that you thought was too clunky for the steadicam approach, and what is your opinion of the handheld mode with the cradle?

It is a big difference but it's all about volume - battery plate is made in volume with molded and stamped parts so in a way is relatively unusually lower price rather than the quickplate being relatively high price. In other words if they only made a fairly small number of battery plates they would probably be $350.

And it's not just the manufacturing costs - funky parts like that take a fair amount of time to design which only gets spread out over a small number of unit sales, so to justify making all those different things so people have a variety of ways to get the job done you have to charge a premium.

The Battery plate rests on the Top Rods attached to a universal mount, I'll take a pic here shortly. Usually 8 GB cards or 4 minutes is enough for most applications, So cards and a battery on the top rear.

Agreed, it's too dang spendy. I've wanted it, but will go with the ET plate, the battery plate and a few other clamps instead.

Skip the Red Cradle. I've been much better off using foam or bubble wrap to isolate the Red Drive from vibrations when doing handheld, car mount, etc. With the Cradle it is hard mounted to the camera so every bump the camera takes, the Drive does as well. Also with the cheap price tag for the battery plate, you might as well buy two.

Looking forward to the ET shock mount.
