  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why is Sony claiming as the first to shoot a 4k music video?

A few days ago I went to the movies to watch Cloud Atlas.
while waiting, they had pre-shows, you know, before the previews.
One of the shows was about Taylor Swifts new music video. It claimed that it was the first true 4k music video ever, shot on the Sony F65.
what do they mean by "true" 4k? And how can they possibly claim to be the first to shoot a music video in 4k?
I have myself shot a number of MV's on RED Epic, Scarlet and One. I don't understand...
 
Funny, I was B CamOp on 4K MVs over 2 years ago on my R1MX, and I was a late bloomer!!!!

not to be to brash..... But how many commercials do you see for Asian car featuring "innovations" that German/Euro and American manufacturers already had a decade ago? Infiniti with a commercial actually advertising that they now included an exterior temperature readout on the Q45.... When my already long gone BMW had that about a decade before... And certainly even that BMW was not the first...
 
I think Sony likes to play games with the whole, "RED isn't true 4K while our special angled Bayer sensor pattern with secret math technology is the only REAL 4K." It's the ultimate chutzpah marketing claim.
 
Sony was also responsible for the hilariously misleading "True HD" moniker.

By the way I would assume that all those music videos shot on 35mm were "true 4k" over a decade ago. ;)
 
For those who are new or have recently decided to pay attention, Sony is always the first to do anything. Just ask their marketing department. Both their video electronics and gaming divisions are guilty of this sort of marketing. I have so many little stories and anecdotes about Sony's antics in the gaming industry from when I was a game developer... I wouldn't even know where to begin. Things like claiming a certain realtime fur simulation was being performed on pre-release PlayStation2 hardware, but they really had a $20K SGI workstation hidden under the table. I don't know about you guys, but when I go to NAB and walk through Sony's mega-booth space, I always feel dirty. Dirty in that Las Vegas, "I just blew two mortgage payments at the craps table with a hooker whispering in my ear" sort of way...
 
I saw the same thing when I went to Cloud Atlas. It sure looked bad, bad black levels and contrast and quite soft but I guess that was probably the projector, probably some underpowered 1080p projector they use to show ads before the previews and before the lights dim down.

Sony must think "True 4k" is at least as many green photosites as output pixels, since that is what the F65 has. The next company will say its not "True True 4k" unless there are enough R, G, and B photosites to give you full 4k RGB.

It makes sense Sony wants to have some claim to revolutionizing "True 4k". This is probably some of the first mention of 4K the general consumer public will see, and Sony wants them to think they are at the forefront of this "new" technology and be the first name consumers think of.
