  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why is my RED One suddenly so noisy. . . video noise, that is. . .

Hi all. . .

Last year, when we shot the majority of our film on Build 15, our camera was clean as a whistle except in really poorly-lit areas.

This year, when using Build 18, it's noisy as heck. I mean, it looks like my old HVX-200. It doesn't matter how much exposure, either. If it isn't 100% blown, it's noisy.

The only differences between this year and last year are these:

1. New audio update versus original equipment
2. Shooting on drive versus shooting on cards
3. Build 18 versus Build 15
4. Birger mount versus dumb Nikon mount

That's it.

It's just ridiculously noisy. I can't stand it. I want my clean-as-a-whistle camera back again.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Stephen

I have to agree with you. My older footage never had any noise. Now, I always have some noise in my shots. Red Space seems to amplify this, so I never use it. I would be curious to hear other reports.

That is contrary to what most other people are saying (Build 15 and before versus Build 16 and later). I would recommend submitting a support ticket so the tech support guys can help you trouble shoot....

Is everything about how you are processing and evaluating the footy apples to apples?

Was there any change in how you were viewing the footy? New monitor, older monitor re-calibrated, dark room vs bright sunny room??? Exposure lifted in grading? Older footy shot in daylight, build 18 clips under tungsten? Etc.

Cheers - #19

Just checking... but have you performed a Black Shading function lately?

We have made no changes in processing at all. We were editing proxies, and still are editing proxies. No grading involved in either place. Same program. Indeed, the new footage sticks out in the time line like a sore thumb. As soon as we are into new shots, BANG, there comes obnoxious levels of noise, even in the most brightly lit daytime scenes.

And this is the exact same computer system. Footage shot under Build 18 recently looks like an HVX. Footage shot under Builds 15 and 16 looks clean as a whistle.

I'll try Build 20, but I've heard that it has issues with the Birger.

I just want my old camera back. I loved the RED One. Now it irritates me every time I look at the footage.

Blair, what are the procedures for initiating a repair ticket?

Stephen

I am noticing the same thing.
In perfect conditions 'exteriors daylight' I get noise.
It's not affecting the resolution, It's really small "grain looking " and it mimics film, so I don't bother.

I am on build 20

Wonder what sort of issues? Upgraded to build 20 the day the beta was available and have not had any problems. The lens data is there as well.

Have you run black shading as Dan suggested?

How about a screen grab to point out the noise? Also try a camera reset and new blackshading? to eliminate that first. had similar when i uprgaded to build 20 and had to blackshade twice. Then another problem all-together with vertical lines, but that is another story.

Restore your black shading to factory default, then perform a new black shading and don't let any light hit your sensor.

Black Shadings are additive so after some time, it's best to reset the camera back to factory which clears any other shadings you've done, and get's you a "fresh" start.

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Can you post some images / clips?

To second Dan's question, when was the last time you did a black calibration and under what conditions and settings relative to your typical shooting?

Why edit with the proxies other than just for offline workflow?

Most of us are finding the opposite of what you are experiencing. Build 15 was terribly noisy, especially in the blue channel. Build 16 gave us something that felt like a whole new camera. We now have that again with Build 20. If you're experiencing significant amounts of noise under proper exposure, there's probably some settings that are messed up or a kink in your workflow. Possibly a camera in need of repair.

Wow ... it this REALLY true ! Is this spelled out in the R1 manual ?

CAN SOMEBODY FROM RED CONFIRM ASAP PLEASE ... ?!

Yes, doing a new black shading can be part of our troubleshooting process. In the release notes, it always says to do a black shading after you upgrade firmware.

"Note: After the firmware upgrade, re-format the CF card and perform a BLACK SHADING calibration."

Sure, and I do do this after a firmware upgrade ... I was SPECIFICALLY referring to the statement [it's best to reset the camera back to factory] ... ie: reset camera back to factory, THEN format CF and THEN do black shading ...

I'm going to go ahead and do the upgrade to Build 20 and the black shading, and maybe that will fix it, but I'm extremely skeptical.

Jeff, our workflow is EXCLUSIVELY editing of the proxies, and always has been. We never use any programs except FCP. It used to look amazing. Now it looks like crap. And the problem is entirely with the new feature that's been enabled called "HVX-noise look." It is possible that I am confusing Build 15 and 16, but I do know this, that we started shooting in May of last year (2008) and stuck with that build throughout the entire film, even though new ones came out. What I know now is that I went from practically noiseless to noisy as heck. And I hate it.

It isn't an ISO problem. Set at 320 as always.

I'll try the new build.
