  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why is its so hard to carry the Metadata the through the HDSDi

i have been working for this production company who have had trouble with the workflow because of dit conversion and schedules

shoot 1
No problems as i did the transcode's for the next day but they ideally needed the converted files at the end of the shoot

shoot 2
problem 1 - dit did not enable scratch audio on dnxhd conversion so 4-5 extra hours syncing audio
Problem 2 - missing Raw files

lucky enough i took a back up and all files were fine and there

shoot3
problem 1 - a few corrupt dnxhd converted files
Problem 2 - The dit also converted the r3d's to dnxhd from red gamma 3 we shot to redlog instead of redlogfilm so all the high lights were burn't out and now they are paying for transcodes again

They have asked me to look into recorders but am i right in saying the only one that will give them the option to go back to r3d's if need is the pix240 or soon to be released meizler module?

is there away to go back to r3d's with timcode if you are using
samurai
blackmagic shuttle 2
kipro mini - VMI hire said to me the kipro mini had metadata function removed in the last firmware upgrade for some reason.

Why is it so hard?

cheers

The meta data for timecode and file names is always pumped through the SDI. It's all about the recorder at that point. As of now, the samurai is great but it doesn't record the file names but the timecodes match. Don't forget that the look is baked in to whatever color gamma settings you have set. I'm not buying the blown highlights because of wrong color settings. If your highlights are blown, it's pretty much the case on all gammas. Granted, gamma3 is more contrasty but you are hovering too close to the clipping point if it makes a difference. Sorry to hear about your DIT woes - hope you don't have to work with him again.

thanks for the reply BOB

i might have been over exaggerating on the blown out highlights problem but here are a couple of grabs showing the diffrence on two of the shots, we were shooting Red Gamma 3 and when flipping between relogfilm and the raw
it looked fine and the director was happy , we had no way of flagging the sunlight hitting the kids in the garden or time to be fair but as i said for some reason the DIT transcoded to redlog which made it worse

the brighter of the two is the redlog

agree totally that why the highlights are lost when the dit screwed up and transcoded to redlog if you look at the shots through the window the brighter one is redlog and the flat image is redlogfilm

hi Bob

the client has just agreed to get a samurai in for next batch of films which is great!!! have you had any problems or got any tips you could share

and have you been using it with 3 v3.3.14 ?

latest firmware 3.21 has been working great. I have a 500GB drive in there and do not have any issues. I would definitely test the drives, as that seems to be the variable of what works and what doesn't.
