Here's what I find most exciting about the RED Scarlet series of cameras (based on what we know so far).

  • Can be a quality still camera, or cinema motion camera (unlike other video cameras which take mediocre still images).
  • Can record at 3k+ resolutions.
  • Can record in RAW with minimal compression.
  • Supports high frame-rates for slow motion scenes (plus time-lapse).
  • Supports almost unlimited lenses (depending on the type of Scarlet you get).
  • Records superb looking images (colour, contrast, etc) usually unheard of in the world of digital video.
  • Packages all of this with a prosumer price tag one could only dream of.
  • And finally, RED cameras are made by people who are very passionate about their work, and pleasing their customers, and I'm sure this will be quite obvious when using the camera.

This camera will allow people with ordinary wallets to do extraordinary things, normally only possibly with very expensive cameras and equipment (sometimes requiring a combination of expensive cameras to do all of this).

I'm so sick of dealing with the heavily compressed, low quality HDV standard used by Sony, JVC and other vendors which doesn't even support a full HD resolution (1440x1080 instead of 1920x1080). Panasonic's the leader from what I can see in the prosumer HD market, although even they are miles behind RED. I'm also quite over that cheap video look and the fact that there's not a reasonably priced camera anywhere in the world (that I know of) that can do decent slow motion at a decent resolution, even cameras capable of progressive 50/60 fps are a rare find in the 0 - $10000 USD price range.

RED is plugging a hole that has never been plugged before. That massive gap in both quality and price between < $10000 cameras and $250,000 cameras. Exciting times ahead, that's for sure.

I'd love to hear of other features and abilities people are looking forward to with the RED scarlet.

Cheers

Your short list hits all the major points for Scarlet!

And this is EXACTLY why we're so excited!!! Can't wait to start shooting some of my projects in REDCODE. :-)
