  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why does the monitor go haywire when changing to 1:1 and back again?

Is it a personality disorder of some sort? Really freaks people out on set when it does it and every now and again it will hang in that whack-mode causing a need to push the button again. Can that be fixed in future software updates?

I've also noticed, on the cameras I use, that there's an additional quirk - in the scramble, the camera will flash a single frame from the last time I punched in (or maybe last clip recorded, haven't really looked too hard into it). Doesn't seem to hurt anything, so it's more just an amusement/annoyance - but anyone that happens to be at video village when I punch in invariably asks in a frightened tone, "What the hell was that?!"

Yep a clean and much quicker magnify proces with choice not to affect the hd-sdi would be really nice. Magnify freaks people in video villages out, and operators also, time to fix this :)

The whole EVF situation on the Epic is lacking (really to bad). From the magnify, which is minor problem compared to the whole contrast, color, brightness issue. I used a Sony F55 the other day and was really impressed (and depressed) to see their EVF. Perfect color, contrast, brightness match to the SDI feed. And all completely adjustable to whatever you'd like to see! Magnify was instantaneous with no glitches or delays. EVF is clearly the weakest link of our system, is it fixable, Red team?

Deff freaks people out. I get all types of comments about it. like for example, "Hey what is that pinstripe pattern when you push in to focus" to "the picture is broken, is that going to be recorded?"

Agree that the EVF is the weakest link in an otherwise incredible camera. Even the EVF solution on the Red One was far more acceptable. I really hope that Red can address this issue as it is very disconcerting to DP's as they cannot trust the picture they're seeing. This is a problem with both the LCD version (poor contrast) and the OLED version (very warm with poor shadows).

Agreed. I weighed the options with the +1 module, and a 3000+ dollar EVF plus another 1250 dollars to make it truly functional in a production situation was just too much.

I think I'll be trying the Alphatron EVF out post-NAB. That said the magnify setup NEEDS to be resolved. Even if it just faded to black for a second that'd be more elegant than the garbled image.

I saw the Alphatron today and looks like a viable option. Loop out SDI.....going to have a closer look at it at NAB......What to do with the OLED and the Plus One which BTW I haven't used on a shoot, still Beta.......

I did install the last beta version V 4.0.9 and the magnify 1/1 is much faster, and from my quick little test, the issu with the screen getting dark is gone.
I need to try harder to see if this bug have been completely killed by the Red team. So far so good. ;-)
Best

Changed to 4.0.9 and the outcome is the same, spastic monitor when switching between 1:1 and normal view. Normal view, normal view, normal viewwwwww...

Plus one EVF I can move from my Epic, to a C300, to my DSLR, gotta love that.

Have been using 4.0.9 and toggled between 1:1 for several days now without issue. However, I did have those issues in previous beta build.
