Why does Epic feels different...?

I have a couple of Red 1 cameras and have enjoyed shooting with them for the last 3years
I was always really aware of what a big deal they where for the industry.
I was frequently blown away by the pictures they helped me make.
I also really benefited financially from some of the creative and biz opportunities they made possible for us.
And after I upgraded to MX I never wanted for more from the picture side....

all that said I never really really bonded with the camera as a tool or material object. Don't get me wrong I always loved the idea behind the camera but the physical camera never made me feel much at all.

The Epic is very different for me.... and its not just because it is new (I love my 5d for stills but I would much rather have a Contax in my hand... )

I have some theories why I feel really good about the Epic but I was just wondering how others lucky enough to have shot with one are feeling? Any difference?

PS I realise there are more than a few of you who feel very very attached to their Red 1s... and obviously Jim and the guys will feel very protective about it as their 1st born.. no denigration of those bonds intended.

I think the big difference is, it gives you a new kind of freedom on the high end side, what we got on the low end side with dslr's and camera's like the gopro the last year. Being possible to make shots that were difficult with big camera, shoot in airports and people thinking your just taking photographs, mounting the camera in a car, taking the camera to the top of a mountain in your backpack, that kind of stuff we had to do with inferior quality camera's, and now the power of a red in the package of these new smaller camera's=dream camera, i think that makes the difference compared to the R1.

The possibility to shoot one man documentary style, or the highest budget feature films with the same camera is fantastic. That makes it feel different.

I feel you are both making points I agree with... Epic does feel really liberating purely from its form factor 'a real film makers camera'. Cause lets face it a 235 or a 35mm aaton could do nearly everything that the Red 1 could do (albiet with price and workflow differences). But an Epic really is a bit different.?

Not sure it is the full explanation...

because its a DSLR shaped nuclear bomb...thats what i feel. you CAN shoot with natural light in 90% of the shooting scenarios and 90% of the locations where it was a big hussle (inside a fiat punto for example :)
and yeah, you can shoot 3D steadycam shots with it in the subway too hehe

As my Belgian father used to say, "Honger is het beste saus." (Hunger is the best sauce.) There could be a little of that with the Epic.

I'm sure the Red One will always have a special place in Jim's heart, but I feel like EPIC is the camera Jim wanted to make from the beginning. You never forget your first love, but it's that real love that lasts forever.

I usually try to steer clear of fanboyism but I have to tell you...after using the Epic-M on pickups for our feature film "Run Away With Me" and doing a quick fashion shoot during the down time...I don't want to use another camera.

Now I'm not saying other cameras can't make lovely images at all. What I am saying is that RED have cracked the code.

120fps @5K, HDRx, Raw onto SSD, Easy operation, Quick Bootup...all in a bullet proof package that I can run around with in London, hand held and shoot guerrilla style without attracting too much attention? It's the holy grail.

Can't wait for 20 years time when there'll be a new Epic of the same size/weight that lets me shoot at 1000fps 5K and near zero (better than film) rolling shutter...I think those are the only points I can think of that would make it more magical. But I digress. A lot of people (me included) tell RED what they could do better when sometimes they should sit back and applaud.

The Epic feels different because it's magic.
