  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why do Red batteries cost so much when they don't work?

I think this might have something to do with why the camera shut down right after lift off when mounted it to our helicam the first go. To balance the rig out we mounted the v-lock battery belt clip with 6ft. of cable to the rear of the heli.

Nice Job Wendell

Don't you agree?

Jeremy

No I don't agree... geez a little research or asking the right questions could have solved your problems relatively quickly.

No, it is a smart charger, and the above comments reflect an original firmware charger.

That firmware tested battery temperature only when it was first mounted, if too hot to safely charge, it prevented charging.

The newer firmware re-tests for battery temperature when first mounted and again every few minutes.

I'm not sure when you guys switched over to this magical newer firmware but I've used chargers that shipped with cameras from SN in the 400's-4000's and it still happens, frequently. So I'm sticking to story, the chargers are dumb. :ciappa:

RED CHARGER

Fact is RED CHARGER is a smart charger, and this re-test battery temperature software has been in place for many months.

Have a chat with RED tech support if your unit(s) don't appear to offer that.

Smart or not smart, the dry fact is that such a basic elementary functions as charging and powering up the camera is not working.
I stopped sending chargers and battery plates fr repair because at the end, it doesn't really help.

David if you would like to send me a P.M outlining your experiences, I'd more than happy to look into why you think that...

A great guy named kyle mallory showed me a trick to solve this problem I was having as well. It involves taking a small screwdriver to the pins on the battery plate and bending them to make a more reliable connection. The more permanent fix is to take small amounts of cut up rubber bands and wrangle them into the under sides of the pins on the battery plate forcing them into the upward position for a great contact and the rubber band shards help them to not just get bent back down. Thanks Kyle!

We're not looking for a fight we're looking for equipment that does what it's suppose to; work. We all use different equipment from different places/people, rental houses and private owners alike. We can't control when/how/if these problems can get fixed. Telling me to send in the equipment doesn't mean anything. I'm aware it's broken.

This forum is Red's way of getting feedback from its user's about what is going wrong with their designs/etc. The solution to many of these errors/issues/problems/flaws would be found if Red would do proper PRIVATE beta testing PRIOR to releasing equipment to the public. I don't care if that would delay the release of equipment a year.

If you can't handle us bitching about things not working, change your business model. Jim also wouldn't need to take breaks from this forum because people are calling his baby retarded and ugly. All that kind of name calling should be done behind closed doors and not on a public forum, like this. It really takes away from all the amazing things the dedicated employees at Red Digital Cinema have done extremely well.

Switronix offers a service to repair your red brick, worth to take a look seriously..

I'm aware of all these screwdriver, version 2 plates (that don't work any better), send it back to red, and 3rd party conversion solutions. But that's NOT the point I'm trying to make. The thing is we shouldn't have to do any of that BS. It wastes everyone's time and money, it also make Red look like a bunch of jokers that don't know what they're doing.

Again, I don't mind waiting for equipment that works, period, under any circumstances. Which, I hope, is why they have stopped the practice of talking so much about release dates and step by step developments of their new gear. All this new stuff they're coming out with better work or Red's days are numbered!

This forum is Red's way of getting feedback from its user's about what is going wrong with their designs/etc.

However solutions to the issues raised in this thread were identified and implemented into production several months ago.

For example, we re-designed the V plate for significantly better battery mount stability, and we updated the charger firmware to understand when batteries had cooled down to a safe enough temperature to accept a fast re-charge.
Both updates are available to our customers via RED tech support.

We have nothing to hide, we want all of our customers to be fully satisfied.

If you wish to send me a PM about your specific situation, please do so.

I've said my peace, the Red way, publicly. "We have nothing to hide... send me a PM...":001_huh:

Stuart,
Blaire is right.
The batteries, the plates, the chargers should work with no hiccups.
It is standard and basic. Powering up the camera.
What would you do if you buy a new car and once in a while during its first year the car wouldn't start?

When someone asks me what is wrong with the Red One, my response is "Point to anything on the camera that says Red" (they point to something) "yeah, that doesn't really work unless you...."

There would not be such a backlash against the Red One if there were not so many retards in love with the camera proclaiming it's, undeserved, greatness to the world all the time.

Sounds like a troll to me. Of course I have no idea what backlash he's referring to.

If you don't know about the many issues with the Red One you are one of the people I'm talking about that is proclaiming it's undeserved greatness.

You can't throw away 100+ years of camera design/manufacturing, as Red is apparently trying to do, and expect professionals to not tell you; you messed up. I'm trying to follow the rules Red wants us to follow, this is the complaint department of RedUser, and I am complaining. Other redusers shouldn't get butt hurt over something they didn't design, so chill out folks.:chillpill:

To continue my complaint about how the camera is powered... Since when is NOT having a 4pin or 3pin XLR on a professional camera for power acceptable? In what universe is that kosher?

I remember people saying/promising "with the design of the Red One we won't have to buy a new camera every 2 years to get new functions that should have been included in the first place...." "software based cameras are the wave of the future," except when the hardware doesn't allow a clean output, or framelines (unless the lcd or viewfinder is unplugged), or standard sized hdsdi/xlr, or a 4pin xlr for power.

hooray for the rebellion saving us from the big corporations that give us tools that work! hooray... hooray....:sarcasm:

Red has very smart engineers, RedCode is seriously amazing. It's just to bad that they have never been in the field and actually used a camera before. So they don't know what we need it to do. Because AC's have been screaming for usb in/outs and hdmi ports on a camera for decades....:emote_headwall:

I would contact the dealer and get it sorted.
Right.
And what would you do if it repeats happening again and gain after parts were with the dealer and came back to you supposedly repaired ?
(You don't need really to answer, these are retoric questions, I am only trying to make the point, which is clear we are all just pretending)

In that case you would obviously go back to the dealer, insist on talking to the department manager, and on getting whatever issue you have sorted out once and for all.

Have you spoken to Brent about this?
