  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why CMOS over 3CCD ?

Both CMOS and CCD can have the same readouts - global or rolling - it's not tied to the silicon production method. However, CCD readout has the vertical streaking issue on highlights. CMOS can have global or rolling shutter, or very fast rolling shutter. Either way - tradeoffs.

Very true. I was speaking in terms of how they are commonly implemented, but you are right, neither is locked in to a global or rolling shutter.

I was under the impression that the vertical streaking issue on highlights was a result of the way they shift the data out of the CCD array. (shifting row to row if you will). I looked at some of the schematics for it and explanations, If they did a rolling shutter on the CCD, would it still have this problem?

You're asking the wrong guy on that nuance of how CCDs work.... I'm still learning this sensor stuff.

Graeme

Haha, okay, and believe me, I understand. Not a lot of companies release their sensor information. From what I have learned on CCD and CMOS designs, I've extrapolated from patents. Mostly I've been fascinated with CMOS since that's the technology I work with every day. But most places that talk about them online are pretty general.
