  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why can't a S35/PL lens focus on the full FF35 sensor?

Can't a S35mm/PL lens be made to focus on the total area of a FF35 sensor much the same as still lenses can be used with 36x24mm & 24x16mm sensors?

Why not vary the focal length with a custom mount?

Dave

Because optics don't really work that way, at least not well. If a lens is designed to cover a S35 frame then no matter what hoops you jump through it will never cover a FF35 frame well. Any lens that covers FF35 will of course cover S35. The trick is for RED to make their new lenses all cover FF35 in PL mount so then you could use them for whatever you wish.

Longer PL lenses tend to cover but perfomance isn't designed past the 30/31mm image circle. Some lenses also have baffles which limits the image circle.

Of course, re-barreled still lenses like some Panavision lenses will also cover the still 35 format.

You can also look at Epic FF35 as an awesome multiformat camera. You get 3perf, 4perf for anamorphic, and vistavision in one camera. Shoot 3 perf normally or 4 perf anamorphic and when you need to do vfx plates, switch to vistavision.

switch mounts?

switch mounts?

Do you mean installing a PL mount on the Epic FF35 for 3perf and 4perf, then switching to the Red Mount for vistavision?

Literally one of my POVs.

Hi,

Don't forget the Red 18-50 & 50-150 zooms will cover FF35.

Does the new 18-85mm RED zoom cover FF35?

Stephen

Can someone confirm this. Its not a surprise. But confirmation would be terrific!

It all depends what the original lens was before remounting was made. For example most early remounted Canons and Leicas do cover the big 35 frame. Indeed some cover vistavision. The new remounted lenses if not fitted with restrictive baffles inside should cover. But hey! why not own up to what Stills glass the red lenses were previously? My bet is Sigma but what do I know!! An interesting thread. TonyCovell@talktalk.net.:umm:
