  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why are ppl so down on Scarlet Fixed lens??

I've played with a working Scarlet and I thought the camera felt amazing, the overall build quality was nothing short of your high end medium format still cameras. Sturdy but not heavy, just professional looking and feeling. I shoot action sports so this camera suits me perfectly, cannot wait to own one. I'm setting aside around 12k which i think should cover the camera and minimal accessories.

I have read on youtube and here that ppl don't like fixed lenses just wondering why??? Scarlet will be awesome!!!!!!!

Its good in proper application (for me at least)

Scarlet Fixed: Good for run and gun/live events and other B-roll

Scarlet Interchangeable/epic: Better for indie films/more depth of field shots/interviews, and low light (granted you have the fast glass red mini primes)

But those would be my personal applications for those two different camera, not everyones. Some like larger depth or not like the look of a 35mm DOF like on a 5D or an Epic.

I plan on getting an interchangeable, and maybe a fixed body, because for the price of a nice zoom lens...I can get a second body for almost the same price! lol.

Exactly my plan. Except the opposite. I plan on getting the Fixed with a kit and the Interchangeable body with a lens or two to compliment it.

My other idea is to get the interchangeable and hope there is a mount and actually get a couple of RPP's the 300 :) to use that crop ratio to film surfing.

Well there's your mistake. Don't try reading youtube, just look at the pictures. :biggrinjester:

First of all understand that I'm not against Fixed lens, it's just not for me.

Chromatic aberration is a question mark, as we haven't seem a whole lot of footage from scarlet yet. However, the quality of the optics have been said to be very good, and on par with the Mini pirimes. Jarred's exact quote: "The design of the Zoom is incredible, we were able to bring it well over 100 lp/mm to match the mini primes, so the two lenses will match very well in terms of sharpness."

[...]

$20,000 for the price is far above anything that we've heard for a Scarlet package, and is speculative only.

Of course they don't trash-talk their own product, that would be stupid. But fact is the 'focus' video did show visible chromatic aberation.

Not everyone lives in Americaland. I would have to add 37% to the price to bring it to Denmark legally. That makes my production package at $15.000.

Scarlet Fixed is going to be the perfect run and gun camera. With HDR and all that 120fps amazing-ness! (maybe not at the same time but thats ok) Can't Wait!

The history with RED is that their products don't need to be hyped - the quality of their products speak for themselves. And judging from everything we hear from Jim and Jarred on here, RED wouldn't hype a bad product. It's just against their corporate culture. The idea of developing a state-of-the-art camera and hiding it behind an inferior lens, also runs counter to logic.

But still... $15,000, given a 37% markup, means that the original price would be around $11,000. That's still speculative, and quite a bit above any price that we've heard mentioned for a Scarlet package. I'll concede that we should expect the price to go up, but you're listing the price as a reason why "ppl are so down on Scarlet Fixed lens", when no price has been given for it yet.

Will RED really release two versions of Scarlet? I'm no longer sure about that since the "changes"-thread. It wouldn't be a big surprise for me if RED drops the fixed version. They could've used the additional time to convert the lens into one for the interchangeable body ("lens issue"). I think this more realistic than the "new-sensor/4k"-theory, which could still come with a Dragon sensor-upgrade later...

Wild guessing aside, like Jeffrey i'm planning to start with the fixed, because the lens fills most of my needs. I'm not sure yet what comes after that, i tend to skip the interchangeable Scarlet and get a EPIC-S instead.

But hey, "Everything in live changes...." my plans too, i just need some final specs and prices. ;)

I actually think that the biggest challenge presented by the Fixed Scarlet will be quality control in lens manufacture while meeting the price point. It's exciting to think that we can get a cine-quality lens with basically a free body attached (try pricing out similar lenses) but the hard part is going to be delivering the lenses in quantity. This is a complex optic. I'm sure it has well over 20 lens elements in close to 20 groups.

Now, consider the Duclos 11-16. The stock Tokina 11-16 known to have CA problems. I couldn't figure out why people don't complain about CA in the Duclos version and why CA seemed absent, until Mark Duclos stated that their version is adjusted and tuned to optimize optical performance. That's a 1.5:1 zoom with 11 groups and 13 elements. The Fixed is an 8:1 zoom with (I would estimate) over twice as many moving parts. And the Fixed zoom has a lp/mm spec MUCH higher since it's a cine-quality lens for a much smaller sensor with smaller photosites. (If you make comparisons, make sure you convert to the same units of lp/mm since specs are often given in lp/picture height. Comparisons are also difficult if we don't know the MTF at which the measurements were taken). Lot's of tweaking and testing in the manufacturing process by skilled optical engineers = $$$

We don't know how much of the lens manufacture is done by RED and how much is jobbed out. The component shortage caused by the tragedy in Japan could have meant anything from the entire lens assembly to just the elements or just the housing. There were also more vague references to problems that may have been related to manufacture - possibly the QC challenges alluded to earlier.

In any case, I'm still planning to get a Scarlet Fixed. RED is run by a guy that knows a thing or two about manufacturing and QC. He is not some genius trying to revolutionize the cine-camera industry from his garage workshop. He is a genius with access to some of the brightest, most creative and experienced people on the planet and money to build whatever is necessary to achieve his goal. Problems are solvable. But solutions do take time to figure out, and can cost extra $. The important thing is getting a professional tool. No compromises.

I expect Scarlet fixed to remain substantially the same as we have seen: 2/3" 8x T2.6 zoom. I expect a bare bones package to price out reasonably competitively with other similar fixed lens entry level Pro HD cameras. Specifically the Canon Xf305, and the Sony EX1R and similar class cameras from Panny. I expect it will be the first and only 2/3" format camera on the market for a while with a starting price under $10k. I expect it will be the first camera of its format and certainly in its price class to substantially out perform 16mm film in most respects as an acquisition format.

I don't think any of the footage we have seen so far, as good as it is, indicates what this camera will perform like when it is released. Just because there was a little CA in a short clip from an early prototype doesn't mean it will still be there in the production model.

The $15.000 is the PRICE for what I WOULD NEED. Add to that 37%

So you have $15,000 to spend on a kit. I guess that would depend on your needs - what you anticipate for media, support, etc. Is this for a full kit? Camera, media, triopod, matte box, filters, and on and on...?

I'm trying to understand what you're expecting to need, buy, and at what price. I think of any other system that would give close to comparable specs at a similar price (or... what it's reasonable to assume Scarlet will sell for). For me, Scarlet seems like such a leap above everything else in it's price range, it's an easy choice for a entry-level camera system.

fix lens or mini primes. i just want the camera some people like me dont really need a epic.

I don't think people are really down on Scarlet Fixed at all. I think people are down on that other Scarlet.. Scarlet Non Released.

I think it will be an attractive package, it's the lure for future EPIC customers. The business is in the accessories. Once we have all the accessories, we'll be (hopefully) in the position to say: "If I just remove this brain and replace it with this other one..."

That is only for Red-related products.
