OT but i loved the hero/bad guy set up in Appaloosa. I think only western can be so black and white.

I love Westerns, but Appaloosa was one of the worst Westerns I've seen in recent memory.

DVXuser has a new short film fest in the works. West Fest !! Check out the details here ...

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?f=203

I have some scripts available, or can collaborate to write others.

I'll be posting the scripts (4 to 6 pages) here ...

Certainly one of my favorite genres! Anyone out there with a Red and a few head of cattle??

Alex

I might be interested. let me talk to a few people here and we'll see what we can do. Might not be much as our school year is drawing to a close, and equipment is gonna be unavailable in 2 weeks but, we shall see.

I've been wanting to do a western based on a photographer in the 1800's...

I have a RED... jib, hmi's, genny, motorhome, 50 acres with about half as hard wood forest, 3 horses, and some time to kill.

Don't have any actors, script or distribution options though.

Would love to shoot one!

Due date for films is July 19th, so a pretty comfortable lead time. Something that can be shot in a day or two?

Maybe. Sinner looks short enough that we could possibly do 2 days of shooting, but again, it depends on if I can get equipment and people in time

I'm in the Louisville Kentucky area... but a days drive from more than half the population of the USA.

oh... I also have about a 1000 feet of 50 foot wide creek...

About a particular photographer? no not really.... I have thought that a story about a photographer in 1890 come across bigfoot.... hehe or an indian and steals his soul with the camera.... so many options.

Thought you were referring to Edward Curtis. He created some iconic images while also preserving a lot of cultural information about our peoples at a time when the traditions were outlawed...in many ways he was similar to Buffalo Bill -the White guy who first profited off of the plight of the Indians, and then realized he needed to do something to help.

The photog idea is really, really interesting to me. Yeah, and if we can do something with the indigenous peoples, even better.

Very cool indeed!!

The only requirement for the fest is the main character wears a cowboy hat at some point in the flick.

The river sounds like a classy backdrop. With spring and early summer, it must be running pretty good.

I'm happy to write something up, just to see if it has teeth. Any input from Torrie is much appreciated.

Alex, I'd love the opportunity to shoot something with you.

Like I said earlier, I have all the gear required ( camera, grip, lights, sound ) so it would be easy. But.... I tend to be a one man gig or just a few people ( sound ) to help me... not into the bunch of people wearing knee pads standing around eating bagels kind of atmosphere.

My farm is just 25 minutes outside of Louisville ( interesting fact: I live a mile from where D. W. Griffith grew up, Thomas Edison lived here, and of course Abraham Lincoln was born here.... and there are some incredible locations within a few hours of me. There's an antique railroad running an hour away, lots of covered bridges and log cabins...

I also have a production studio in the city... 60'X60' shooting space with a 25' cove... but the studio is a 1800 brick building and the front is an old bar.

feel free to give me a shout if you like... numbers on my web page. Today I'll be out bush hogging a field but can answer the phone or get back to you quickly.

Love your scripts by the way! "the last photograph" would be really fun to shoot!

Also.... I think I can refer quite a few people to you as a writer!

Would be happy to help out in any way. I wear many hats -writing and directing mostly, though my last gig was as DOP on a 90 minute music special for the Aboriginal People's Television Network -Canada's 4th national broadcaster.

Anyway, I have my own R1 package (incl 18-85 zoom) and 3 Avid's...so the ability to actually create something in collaboration is certainly in this thread.

Curtis was known by many Indians as Shadow Catcher...and the dude always wore a cowboy hat.

It might be interesting to explore a short as he went about reproducing one of his many staged photographs...how he came to be in Kentucky and set about lensing a subject...and finally capturing the iconic image. It therefore creates a natural end point to the short.

My 2 cents.

Torrie, very cool!

Looks like your a 19 hour drive from me... hehe

I'm always willing to go anywhere as well.... have the motorhome and it's always geared up. a 2 camera shoot would be fun. Did I mention I have a bunch of old mahogany cameras as well?

The only advantage up here is the tax credits, but that only comes into play when you're paying people...and this is certainly going to be a labor (or in Canada labour) of love.

For example if there was $10,000 paid in labour we could gain an additional $6,500 back from the province of Manitoba. Deferrals don't count I'm afraid...so it comes down to what the story is, whether we can find talent willing and able, and a fun little story with some great panorama.
