  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Who is winning the battle just now? Alexa? Or RED?

I don't see this as a battle. It's utterly true that for any production or shot there's the most suitable camera to use, and that camera changes dependent upon a vast variety of factors. Our job at RED is to make a camera which is "most suitable camera" for the widest range of circumstances. That's why we go for higher resolutions, higher frame rates and lower size/weight with a great number of lens options - all at a reasonable price.

BOOM!!!!

Blades of glory moment! Flames fly from each hand...

Pointless thread by the way.

image wise, the red one, no.. not the red one mx.. no the old red one. is better than what alexa has got... alexa has this softness to it.. and this disgusting shutter thing going on... with red one.. i don't get that crap. to me red is literally the best option out there as a film substitute.. but i hate that its heavy for my small budget filmmaking.. now all that'll change once i get my epic-x which ive paid for and i'm waiting to get. I don't like the shutter on HDRx mode though.. however i can still see it work at some shots that i am planning.

DnxHD also has the advantage that it is a codec that can be read and written to by Windows as well as Linux and Mac. It's one intermediate format which seems to be universal and costs next to nothing to encode/read.

That is pretty much verbatim what Mike said:-)
I just would like to add to the thread at hand, that out of 10 or so projects out of Russia and Ukraine, that I had done in the past 3 months, only one was Red one with Canon. Everything else- Alexa.
Said that, for some reason, over-there, they keep turning FilmMatrix ON on Alexa. Really bad idea and a major pain in the neck to fix it...

I am working on a show at Warner Bros on R1 MX, and also did a pilot for them back in the spring on Alexa. Both shows use almost identical workflow, Red using RMD files and Alexa using LUTs, to transcode dailies, then run a flat pass (true flat pass for Alexa and using redcolor 2 / redlogfilm with my kelvin and tint settings for Red) for final correction in Baselight. Everything was transcoded the same number of times to various DNx flavors for offline and online.

The difference? One DP likes Red, the other likes Alexa. That's pretty much it.

This fits well with how I experience the whole thing...
