Which one delivers the highest quality encodes, which is the fastest, and which ones do certain tasks better than the others ?

Apple's Compressor
Adobe Media Encoder
Handbrake
Sorenson Squeeze
Telestream Episode

Mine, but I haven't developed it yet. I'm being serious but truth is funnier then fiction sometimes. Some of the other guys should be able to guide you but the place to ask is probably over in the red workflow or post forums where they hang out. Be prepared to explain your use and equipment, because itbis a bit like how long a oeice of string is. Deliverables depends on the customer, work codec you could say uncompressed is best but few can afford that, you could say redcode but is your machine powerful enough to habdke it quick enough, you could say something else your custom would be happy with that your machine xsn handle, those guys should kniw the specs if the right ones are around.

I think speed is not quite the issue it used to be, particularly if you pair the software with very fast hardware. I have to say, Apple has stayed on top of things with Compressor, but I know a lot of commercial clients who are using Telestream for web outputs.

Wayne's sucks. I'm using it but I just get black frames. Worst compressor I've ever used. ;)

That's because you are desth dumb and blind Gavin, I said I haven't made it yet, you must be looking at something else but not being able to see anything but black not realise its somebody else's codec you are looking at (or a washing machine ot something)! :)

See Joe, best to ask elsewhere. :)

Here Gavin, use your blind navigation keys to go to the top of the window and read the tile bar, what's it saying "Gavin's Encoder". Lol!

:)

I quite like Apple's compressor, I've read that it delivers less blocking then Media Encoder and it delivers some pretty good results even with 1 pass.
I haven't used Sorenson it's quite expensive but I think Apple Trailers at least used to use that.

So a software rather than an pure encoder codec question. Great, sorry Gavin.
