Evin, just when I thought I'd be able to resist buying anymore lenses you go and post shots with the 300mm. The longest lens I have in my range is 200mm right now and I've been craving the 300mm. :)

Really nice shots by the way.

Amazing Evin!!!!

Thanks,
The 300 really is a super star Steve, it's pretty much just as sharp with the 1.4x & 1.7x as it is alone, so with those two and the 300 you have 300mm f2.8, 420mm f4 and 510mm f4.8. I used the 1.7x converter for the two bottom photos above.

I don't want to buy any more lenses! Darn you! That 300mm does look killer.

But I'm telling you guys, dump those crappy 28mm f2.0 and 35mm f1.4 lenses and buy that 30mm Sigma f1.4 AF (or whatever the heck they call their new autofocus lenses for Nikon). That lens is very, very special, and very, very small and lightweight. I really like it. It isn't a Tokina 11-16 or the 105 f2 DC, but it is an incredibly usable lens.

Now, about that 300. . .

:-(

OKAY! I can tell my wife I'm spared!

I just looked up that Nikon 300mm VR f2.8 lens. . . and it sure OUGHT to be FANTASTIC for that price! $4500?????

Let's see. . . that's not all that far off what ALL of my 11 Nikons cost in total!

:-)

Just guessing here. . . but let's do some quick math. . . (I can't remember exactly, so these might be off by as much as 25%):

Nikon 10.5 f2.8 Fisheye: $450
Tokina 11-16mm f2.8: $600
Nikon 17-35 AFS: $800
Sigma 30mm f1.4: $400
Nikon 50mm f1.4 AIS: $300
Nikon 28-70mm f2.8 AFS: $1200
Nikon f1.4 85mm AIS: $500
Nikon f2 105mm DC: $1000
Nikon f2 135mm AIS: $500
Nikon f2.8 180mm AIS: $500
Nikon f2.8 80-200mm AFD: $800

Estimated total: Approximately $7000

Like I said. . . that 300mm is one lens I won't be buying. . . but it sure looks terrific!

Nikon 80-200

Nikon 80-200

I have a Nikon ED AF Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8. The lens produces very good images but it shifts the image every time you move the focus ring. I see that many people here have that lens. Do you all have the same problem or there are only some bad copies that have this issue?

That is completely normal for a still lens. They were not designed to hold focus throughout the zoom range. That's they why they are $800 instead of $18,000. In general, any still zoom should be thought of as a variable prime rather than a true zoom lens. (Apparently it's the same thing with RED's own 18-50 and 50-150 zooms, although not their 18-85, which is a true zoom.)

My 80-200 does this as well. It's the only lens in my kit that does it. And this is not breathing. It's actually shifting the image left to right in a jerky manner. It's completely unacceptable for pulling focus. I have to contact Nikon and ask them if this is how all of these model work. For a still camera it wouldn't be a big deal.

Well i have the Nikon 14-24 mm AFS f/2.8 G ED, it is such a great lens, you can even pull focus with that. There is no play in the glass elements as the 80-200, and it produces fantastic images.

I think not all the zooms are as bad as the 80-200 regarding the image shift though.

Any body with some experience on the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G AF-S or the 28-70 mm?

Thanks for all of the input everyone. I went ahead and ordered the Red's Nikon mount. I'm going to make a call to a couple of the still shooters I work along side of some here in town that are Nikon guys, and see about putting my hands on a few pieces of glass before I order anything, but these recommendations will play big in the end.
Thanks again.
