So i've recently bought myself a Red Epic. mainly for my own use, but occasionally for rental if the right person calls. Right now i'm running off a Aputure 7inch monitor which is a carry through from shooting on my GH4 / Blackmagic Pocket cam. While this isn't a very posh monitor i've been very happy with the image and know it quite well. I would like the touch so i can easily control my camera while on a ronin m or some similar setup. But i'm not overly concerned about having the posh option. I would always like to be able to use it with other cameras. So due to the lack of availability of the 5inch monitors i'm quite interested in upgrading to the AC7 OLED SDI it seems like a pretty good picture but without vectorscopes and waveform. I'm quite happy using my histogram for exposure and all the cameras i own/use can do this on their own.

I guess my question is: How many of you guys use the RED 5/7/9 inch touch monitors? and how many of you guys use other monitors? and if so do you feel that you get a bit of a knock to your street cred?

Thanks very much

We use the 7" touch. Love it.

If budget is an issue, have you thought about getting the REDLINK, module and controlling your Epic via FoolControl?

Our backup camera control (in case the 7" touch were to ever go out) is an AC7 (HDMI version) + RedLink + FoolControl setup. Yes, you can use side handle, but in backup instances I find the side handle to be cumbersome for primary cam control.

IMO the AC7 colors are pretty piss poor. Normally if we have that attached on the crew side (where clients can see) I just set it to Focus Peaking mode, so no one will complain about the horrendous colors. Not sure if the SDI version is any better.

Yip. That's kind of my plan. I've got the module. It's just that my current monitor is rather scratched. And trying to figure out how much to upgrade... Do you guys use the lcd or oled version? And do you find the red touch colors to be way more accurate?
Thanks.

We're using the AC7 OLED Hdmi version.

And yes, IMO the 7" touch renders colors spot on for our tastes (in both RedLog & Rg4 space).

I bought the Small HD DP7 SBright and it was hard to convince my self of spending the extra money but I have to say it is one of the best choices I have ever made buying gear, and Im very glad I did it.
I was working on a full sun baked white beach with no clouds in sight the other day. You could barely look around with out sunglasses it was that bright, and I could even shoot with my sunglasses on and all necessary crew said that it was just about the best monitor they had ever used in these type of conditions. Id imagine it would work about the same on a full sun snow covered mountain. Thats what I had hope for when I payed the extra cash for it.

Now you may not need to shoot in bright sun light but if you do a lot of out doors jobs you might want to consider that the money spent will be well worth it if you have a hard time or don't want to use your monitor when you really need it.

Just saying it really depends on your end use and what you can afford. Just remember this may be what your director or client ends up looking in to when they pass the camera.
