Which media to be able to record highest framerates on Red Raven?

Hello,

I am looking to buy a Red Raven and I want to be able to max out the camera:
Szenario 1: 120 fps at 4.5K 2.1:1 (4608 x 2160) and 15:1 REDCODE
Szenario 2: 24 fps at 4.5K 2.1:1 (4608 x 2160) and 3:1 REDCODE

Am I supposed to go for the faster bigger media or am I fine with ordering 2x RED MINI-MAG 120GB?
What is the lowest Redcode compression that makes sense?

You can buy any of the RED Minimags and achieve the results you are looking for. It's only when you're dealing with something like an Epic-W that you need to be concerned with the overall throughput of the media itself. That said, I run with a 512g because it saves me having to dump the mag during the shoot as often. 120fps of 4.5K will chew through a 120G card pretty quick.

Still the website teased me with the following info for a 120GB Minimag: 4.5K 2.1:1 (4608 x 2160) and 24 fps at 11:1 REDCODE: 52 minutes
But probably a 11:1 compression is borderline.
What compression settings are you using?

Hey John, I always go with the lowest compression that is reasonable for the project. For things like green screen and/or low light scenarios, go with the lowest compression ratio possible in RAW. It has saved my butt more than once. If you run with a 5:1 or 6:1 compression ratio, you probably won't run into too many issues. But again, run lower compression if you can. Obviously if you run high frame rates, you have no choice but to use higher compression. In those cases, feed the camera more light than you normally would to give that sensor something to bite into.

Hi John,

also remember the Raven doesn't support the higher data rates of the 512gb or 1tb mags.
But I still use 128gb on the Epic-W and it handles it fine (sold my Raven to Kevin). Higher than 10:1 start to get difficult in bad light or fast moving scenes.
For high budget TV commercials I shot 3:1 for 25 fps (PAL country), to have the most data possible.
If you got the budget for two 128gb mags I would get them instead of one large mag.
These mags almost never fail, but better have 2 just in case...


@Kevin hope you got that V-lock adapter now to actually use the Raven

@ Sefan... We're all up and running with the Raven! I had a Scarlet-W previously, but sold it a while back, so good to be back in the RED world...

@ John... As Stefan and I mentioned, the Raven can use any of the media options without any issues. So, it comes down to budget and overall intended use. Good luck!
