I like the idea of off camera recording devices to get the better quality from the camera and avoid the nasty compression, but the cost/downsides make it unattractive. I think $4,000.00 (retail) for the AJA Ki Pro is a bit much for such a bulky device, though I was very impressed to see how it improves upon existing cameras abilities and makes the FCP workflow better. The Convergent Design (both Flash XDR and nanoFlash) also disappoint because they do not have a 2.5" Solid State drive option and do not support better quality compression (I would rather have one 2.5" 128GB SSD drive than 4 32GB CF cards). Either one would make Steadicam shots much more difficult... but maybe the better quality footage is worth the sacrifice.
As far as the camera goes, it's all about your project needs and budget I guess. I am impatiently waiting for RED's Scarlet before I spend any more money on gear because the benefits of the off camera recording are all rolled into the package with RED (except for the faster FCP workflow) and the new design means you can configure the camera to meet your needs... but we all know this already
