  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Which is the best prosumer camcorder?

hi ... we used an Canon XH-A1 too ... at our latest two projects. (corporate video & viral spot) it was the fist HD project we've did (in the past usual DVX100 etc.) ... so i was impressed by the image ... for an 3000 EUR cam. And with a little compositing and color-grading u can get an really nice look.

But a little problem is the HDV-Codec ... there are some difficulties in post and with imagequality during Color-Grading etc.

on the other hand if you can't afford the EX1 the XH-A1 is a quite good alternative choice.

but we are looking forward to shoot on the RED or an EX1 too ! :-) if the budget is big enough.

someone have any experience with the panny HMC151 (AVCHD) ?

thx guys

here is the link for the viral spot - shot on an Canon XH-A1 (sorry, the coding not so good ... the client used an low resolution wmv for the upload on youtube ... )

EX3 sucksssss for handheld.. great pictures.. but just sucks to operate.

yes thats right ... recently i talked with our DOP about that ... he confirmed that
he likes the Canon XH-A1 and the Panny's in the matter of handling.

It is a PROSUMER camera because it is aimed at both professionals and amateurs. That has as much to do with price point as picture quality and ease of use and is NOT a reflection on the user.

Well, by your definition Scarlet will be prosumer too then. The EX cameras are professional cameras. The price point surely says nothing and the picture quality is on pair with cameras costing tens of thousands more. Also, where did you get the EX cameras are aimed at the consumer market too? Somebody without pro knowledge would be lost in trying to get great pictures with the EX cameras as they perform better after some tweaking. Your accessing of the EX series is totally wrong I have to say.

Lovely shot that, Robert. Nice work...

Those of you discussing recording via the HD-SDI outputs on various cameras should check out the Convergent Designs Flash-XDR device, if you haven't already. Unfortunately still long-GOP, but much higher bitrate and 4:2:2, and records for ever!

Personally, I'd like to see a ProRes422/DNxHD external portable HD-SDI recorder, probably with CF or SSD recording mags. That would be fantastic, both for image quality and workflow, imo...

Cheers,
Dom.

...And boom!! Ha ha, thanks mate - I really should do more research before I post! I just assumed the AJA reference was to a new kind of Kona-style card...

That's great - shame no DNxHD for the Avid crowd, but awesome for an FCP workflow. Would also be nice if it were a bit smaller and camera-mountable (to lightweight 15mm rods, for example) - I'd sacrifice some of the features (up/cross/down conversion, for instance) for that. Wonder if there's any chance of a KI-Lite...

Price??!

Cheers,
Dom.

[EDIT] Man, it's BIIIG. That's a bummer, no hand-held run'n'gun with that bastard :-(.

avid ? what is that ?! :sifone::rofl:

ok ...there is a kind of tripod-mount for that ...

it's not really field-friendly, i know

but on a set ... this is a burner ! :head_explode:

Oooohhh... That's just low! :)

Yup, looks great for studio work, but I really can't see why it should be so big. Over-engineering at play there, methinks...

The real juice is a no-frills 4-5lb HD-SDI recorder with removable flash/SSD mags that's field friendly and rod mountable. It's gotta be do-able.

All good stuff though - I shoot a lot of greenscreen work, and the KI would be great for that...

Cheers,
Dom.

probably we have to wait ... untill next years NAB ... maybe there is an miniKI available ... that would be nice! ;)

but for now, i have to wait whether there is any renting agency who has this baby available (in germany sometimes complicated ... the RED - for example - was 6 months ago not really on-hand :( )

but for the next project i really want to use the KI with the Canon XH-A1 ... i don't like HDV that much ...;)

i don't like HDV that much ...;)
Who does?! ;-)

Yup, I think rental will be the way to go with this unit - a smaller "Mini-KI" I might buy in future. Here's hoping...

Whilst I'm hoping, hope you get your way with the German rental facilities mate - nothing worse than knowing kit exists and not being able to get your hands on it.

Cheers,
Dom.

Has anyone compared the quality of the Sony HVR-Z1U component output to higher end cameras. I'm curious just how much better the HD 1080i signal out is than the HDV.

Please advise,
