  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Which Canon primes for Birger mount?

My favorite lens!?

It's not Canon, Nikon or Sigma.

It's Leica Summicron-R 50mm f/2.

It's like PANAVISION Primo L Series quality lens.

"The current LEICA SUMMICRON-R 50 mm f/2 is almost identical
in optical construction with its counterpart in the M-system.
It is one of the two or three best standard lenses in the world."

Erwin Putz>>>

Leica Summicron-R 50mm f/2 mounted on Canon EOS 30D with Leica-R to EOS adapter + RedRock Micro FF and lens gears.

This lens above with Birger Canon EOS/EF adapter will work on RED all MANUAL.

Don't forget that in cinematography a manual control lens works the best.

Also don't trust to auto-focus.

AUTO-FOCUS it's a video thing and with RED we are hope so mostly in cinematography.

Sanjin, Elcan is not leica, for a time they did OEM optics for Leica building certain lenses in Canada but the are a Raytheon Co. and not part of Leitz.

And the Birger mount does not provide Auto focus, it allows us to control the focus using the auto focus motor but doesv not focus for us.

Morning Evin,

If I recall right Elcan stood for Ernst Leitz Canada and was owned by Leica. They made quite a few of the lenses for the Leica camera there. As you say they were bought by Raytheon. Also I seem to remember that Elcan had something to do with a series of Panavision lenses.

Hi Evin.

ELCAN is actually Leica camouflaged in Canada(!?) and by that all main designs for 35mm lenses are based on Leica>>>

Please have a look>>>

History of ELCAN Optical Technologies>>>
1952 After more than a century of fine optics production in Wetzlar Germany,
Ernst Leitz Canada establishes in Midland to manufacture Leica cameras and lenses.

Chuck, thanks for a help, it's not so easy to get a clear opinion or info and really I could understand!!!???

To make more educational links about Elcan/Leica here again>>>

Tomorrow more photos about "former" and "today's" Vienna celebrities done with Leica Summicron 50mm f/2 on Canon 30D CMOS sensor camera.

I will promise a real nice tour!!! 4 photos as usual per info).

Also hope that the weather is a bit nice!!!???

That was an interesting read Sanjin. I didn't know they changed hands so often. Also interesting that they were/are involved with IMAX, though that makes sense since they are both Canadian companys.

I do not know more but is interesing to read!!!

Also it could be interesing thing to not to "jump' in a recent lens advertising HYPE (Nikon, Canon, Sigma, almost all Japanese but I also know that Japanese photographers are the biggest Leica fans:biggrin: :ninja: :sorcerer: .

Just read and get lenses in your hands and test it.

For example Leica Summicron 50mm f/2 was in the same price range as "newer" Canon or Nikon 50mm lens.

I believe in the Panavision's decision to get some good Leica's and contribute to make some of the most beautifull Hoolywood films during 80's and 90's.

Also I know now well that I could not be wrong with Leica in 35mm CMOS moving images sensor like RED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just ask Sordebergh with his long Panavision lens experience!

Just a have look shortly at this shot I did this night on my desk:

ISN'T IT AMAZING?!!!

leica-summ-50-2-1.jpg

Leica Summicron 50mm f/2 on Canon 30D CMOS DSLR camera, ISO 100, shutter speed 5.

WITH LEICA LENSE NOT SO MUCH COLO(U)R CORRECTION/GRADE LEFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EVERYTHING IS A REAL LIKE IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAVE A LOOK ABOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stay tuned!

More to come!

"Sine Patterns" like the charts I have got from the Internet and is probably a "hack/crack".

Also I just printed that at the bw highest resolution.

And still searching for the link!!!!

"Greta" was bought in a local shop.

Also this Leica lens cost me the same as new Canon (350€/US$) in a local Leica vintage shop.

Also I'm going to get 24mm, 35mm and maybe 19mm but even I do not believe in a wide angle below 24mm.

I had a problem with a customer about the shot made with Nikon 17-35mm (at 17m)

there were a lot of CA and purple fringing on one huge print (Super A3 a bad luck!!!)!!!

Than after that error was my decision to go back to the "classics" like Leica and get the best performance for a price.

Panavision also did it years ago!!!!!!!!!!!

LEARN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Soderbergh like Panavision lens guy and the first maker of a whole RED feature film teach us a lot at the beginning.

Please don't forget this fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try to be honest and smart and see all the thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I don't think one should hijack a companys product myself, but here is a legal download of a siemens star target that is handy for adjusting backfocus on video zooms or checking footage scales on primes. Print up a few of these and some 1951 Airforce resoultion targets and you have a poormans test chart.

24 1.4, 35 1.4, 50 1.4,85 1.2, are all excellent choices if the test well on the camera and the mount works as advertised.

You won't get them all for $1500 but they are only a fraction of the price of a set of Cooke or Zeiss optics.

You think so? I think more like Wendy's face, but there's some of me in there.

Graeme
Nose, lips and chin. Just for beginning... Two opinions here. Same easy conclusion.

E. :-)

Yeah, I think that for the money I'm better off with a couple of f2.8 zooms, and then renting PL lenses for any jobs that demand better optics. Those lenses look great, but I can't justify spending that much on SLR lenses (with a more limited range than a 17-55 and a 50-150 zoom combined).

So it looks like 2 SLR f2.8 zooms for $1500 will work for my personal or low-budget needs, and renting PL primes for bigger stuff is the way to go. Hopefully, the new RED mounting system will make it easier for me to switch between the PL mount and the Birger EOS mount without too much of a headache. Thanks all for the feedback!

Sanjin,

Impressive !!!

How do we fit a Leica lense on the RED ONE ?
