Looking for a small B-camera to go with my Scarlet-W. Deciding between the Sony a7sII or the Panasonic GH5 (possibly with Metabones 0.64x XL speedbooster adapter).

Does anyone have any real world experience as to which camera would cut best with the Scarlet-W?

Thanks...

Both would cut well with a nice grade, but the a7sii is very handy to have in the bag when the lights go out.

If you don't need 4K, the Blackmagic Cinema Cameras (and Pocket Cinema Cameras) do an admiral job at cutting together. And they are super affordable.

A7S II and Red Epic MX in combo can deliver some similar images. The main difference i've noticed is the overall lack of fine detail on Sony's footage. This one you can't hide behind the grade. Beware of blues on Sony and be sure to check the highlights - the roll-off is not that silky when it comes to blown-out surfaces.

Both cameras were running 25fps and 50fps at some scenes. It's an old project, so in the final cut i don't really remember where was 25, and where - 50fps. But two sampled images are the exact same framerate on both cameras (image blur is kinda the same). We decided to go 1080p all the way on Sony because of 50p at some scenes.

Final delivery in 1080P.

*Note that the A7SII image had some post-production on the background plate, which is not related to the overall image quality.

I've also been cutting GH5 with scarlet-w. If I'm using it as a B cam on an interview, it takes some tweaking to match, but has been holding up well doing 4K 60fps broll.

GH5 and Dragon cut well in Resolve. It's much better @ 150 Mb/s 10-bit than the GH4 and other 420 cameras are. With the new 400 Mb/s codec, it should be even easier.

I second what guys are saying about the GH5. I ran some tests with different profiles on the GH5 on a 2 cam interview setup just for fun. V Log 10bit can match the Scarlet W in the grade provided that you custom white balance on both cameras. I've heard Panasonic reps state the Natural picture profile in the GH5 is best suited for matching to cameras. Sure enough, that proved to be true in my case. I tried, VLog, Cinelike D and Portrait. But Natural seemed to quickly match the Scarlet W with ease. That's my 2 cents.

Natural is definitely the way to go. Same as on the GH4. VLog may work in the new codec but it's not ready as it stands.
