I think that 2 chained FW800 drives + Card Reader would probably be faster than USB 2.0, at least on Mac.

But you would have to test it.

Taking a look at trends, it seems that a new range is imminent from Apple - the last being launched June 09. In which case the next generation 15" with USB 3 may be a good bet. But how long a wait..?
