I was an avid reader of Geoff's blog on Dark Country, interesting stuff.

Any idea why he hasn't posted lately?

His Last post was this...

"I've been asked to suspend the blog until shooting is finished.

I've agreed to do this.

I am still blogging daily so tune in on the 10th of Cecember for the final updates."

So he should be back with an update at that time.

WTF? Touchy producers?

What a shame since it was a really interesting to look inside a production from the DP's point of view. Especially on a big complicated 3D shoot.

I look forward to his return.

Wasn't it a Sony Production? Perhaps the head honcho's are disliking the fact that competitor cameras are being discussed on one of their shoots. I've heard a couple of derogatory words about Sony in discussions about the blog also so frankly I wouldn't blame them if they did intervene. If it were your or my company we'd probably ask the same!

I think you're right. I remember reading somewhere that Sony is involved.

Heh Heh, It would not surprise me if Sony sees the results
and decides to shelve the whole project because it is too good.
3.5 mil to Sony is chump change.

The film arm of Sony and the Camera / Tech Dept have very little to do with one and other. They're essentially independent companies trying to turn a profit and then reporting those profits to corporate.

hmmm...... perhaps on the surface....

Sometimes corporate ego will trump profits

The production arm of Sony has never had any interaction or interference from the broadcast video side of Sony, other than the fact that Sony now does their HD transfers of features for home video to HDCAM-SR instead of HD-D5. And, of course, Sony Pictures supports Blu-Ray...

I know, I've done some features for Sony companies (Sony Pictures Classics, Screen Gems, etc.) and have never managed to get any deals on Sony equipment for production or post, even when I've threatened to use Panasonic cameras instead. They don't care.

If Sony Broadcasting really had that sort of power, they'd insist that half the big studio projects be shot on the F23 (and certainly any TV show they put money into) as a marketing tool.

.....hmmmmm......

This jives with what I've heard as well. My friend was a PS3 Game developer and he said that Sony's divisions are very hard to work with and have no idea what each other are doing. It's one of the reasons the giant is falling, his left hand can't feel his right.

I don't think the separation of their divisions is necessarily a bad thing. It might be a more efficient arrangement, where the managers of each division aren't micromanaged inappropriately from above.

From a financial perspective, holding a diversified portfolio of unrelated and uncorrelated companies is not a bad idea. It's less risk for the conglomerate (and allows individual divisions to take greater risks). It will take a lot for Sony as a conglomerate to fall since it would take all of their separate divisions to fail.

A look at IMDB pro doesn't list Sony as the production company but I clearly remember that someone from there had influence on what was happening on the film, as referenced on CML.

I don't know how all the financing works on these productions but is Sony then just involved in putting up the money for it.. ?

It'll not return :-(

Sony stopped it, not because of the cameras but because I was breaking my contract in doing it.

Perhapsa if hadn't been so rude about some people it would have been OK :-)
