I haven't followed their news for for a while and now I don't see the thread around here. Do people still use the Birger mount on RED One? Or did the thread get moved elsewhere? Will it work on the Epic?

We definitely use our Birger all the time. . . and love it! BUT, with all of the talk about the new RED cameras and their Canon electronic mount, there just isn't a lot to say about the Birger these days. In addition, the system is "finished" so there is now no longer anything to complain about.

The one new development in the works is that Birger is planning on releasing its own Birger mount controller to replace the Impero.

Again, we love this system. . . and a lot of other RED users do, as well.

Works great. An optimal solution for a number of situations.

Paul

Love my Birger EF mount on my Red too!

A small question for anyone who's tested it - does the EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens work ok with the Birger? Version I does, I'm just curious to know for certain if anyone has done it.

Cheers,

Paul

Overall pretty satisfied with the Birger. Canon L series lenses just look great on the Red!! Can't wait for the new controller as the weekpoint n the system is definitely the impero controller.

Plus one, use the birger all the time, also makes a good nikon or contax/yashica zeiss dumb mount with the cheap ebay adapters.

Besides the fact that it greatly simplifies underwater work, even for regular users I think it is the coolest, most useful accessory ever made for the redone. (maybe the ET 3D rigs, but those arent necesarily only for Red, and I guess I would throw my own U/W housings into the ring too.)

FYI Birger is making a canon smart mount for the AF100 now too.

Paul, II works flawlessly.

Is there any new information on the new Birger remote control.. ?

In Birger's website is mentioned only "lens control system for EF mount lenses on the Panasonic AF100".... "Optional cinema-style remote control, available at additional cost."

Will this remote control work for RED Birger Mount? How much will it cost?

Old one VF works fine why do you need the new one?

Birger mount is the only underwater light weight solution for RED R1 so far and for next several months to come, till EPIC will be shipped with the Cannon mount.

For me Impero did not work as expected.. I sent it once for repair.. Now it's not working again.. Even when it worked it was unreliable. Today is working fine. Tomorrow stops working..
As it has been even mentioned in other threads: there are no two imperos that work the same..
I need a professional reliable tool.. VF Impero is not that one..

On the other hand the birger mount itself has worked fine. This makes me believe that Birger remote control will be much better than Impero..

We have essentially no issues at all with our Impero and our Birger. On rare occasion it won't sync on fire-up, but turn it off and back on again, and it syncs right away. Flawless control after that. Just love it!

I think you didn't play enough with it:-)

Yes, it is bit counterintuitive sometime at power up sequence and calibration, in terms what you have to press and in what sequence.
Once you figure it out, (Birgered)VF, you will see that nothing is wrong with it.
Most problems I tracked down to low batteries, or forgetting to do something before. Also make sure that you have latest version of firmware and you went through all the readme files.

Andrew

Andrew, thanks for spending the time to answer.. I appreciate that..
I was not saying that we never have used Birger.. We have used it in several occasions.. I went through all readme files.. I know about battery problems..
The main problem has been "CONTINUITY": Stopping in the middle of a production.. Working well during check test, then not working at all in the set.. It stopped working once and sent it once for repair.. Now is not working at all again no matter what we do.. That's not what I expect from a professional tool. From where I live I need 10-15 days to repair.. I just can't rely on that..
AFAK I am not the only one with problems..

Andrew I have to agree with Kuytim here -> the VF Impero has never lived up to the potential of the mount itself. While I don't have as many problems with it as he seems to have, the fact that the lenses need to be constantly re-calibrated and http://reduser.net/forum/member.php?u=14606will lose the focus marks in a seemingly random manner - sometimes it keeps them, sometimes not - prevents me from offering it as a "pro" solution to clients. Focus pullers are hard enough to please as it is and after a few tries with the Impero they tend to get pretty upset. Time on set is money.

While I love Canon glass on the Red and use the Birger/Impero all the time for my own projects, video clips, student films and the like, I have to admit being pretty frustrated that a better solution has not been offered yet. I have been several times in person to the Birger offices in Boston while visiting family (my mothers office is literally around the corner) and every time an immanent release of a new and improved controller has been promised. The new design seems promising but it really cannot come too soon and at this point I feel that I will have to wait for the new Epic Canon mount + Pro Redmote with focus control to get a truly working system in place. This is a shame as I've invested pretty heavily into the Birger system and have wanted to use it on bigger projects but can't.

I spend a fair bit of time on shoots pulling focus with the Impero, and I think it should classify as a specific skill all by itself. There have been many times I've needed to re-calibrate the lenses, completely re-do marks, or connect up by cable when the wireless communication simply refuses to work in some locations. Sometimes it works perfectly well, other times it doesn't, or even throws blinking and beeping temper-tantrums when you try to set things like the gearing mode or preset focus points! It's survivable on slow-moving commercial shoots, but fast moving documentary TV? We don't even bother trying anymore.

The Birger mount on its own is perfectly fine. As long as you install and collimate it with care, it's pretty bulletproof. Just be careful with the cable running to the back of the camera! It's easy to pinch it when mounting the camera on a tripod.

I have no regrets at all about the combination - I guess we've had it over a year by now, and it's done the job, allowing us to use Canon glass on the RED ONE where we wouldn't have been able to any other way. We've even got a GATES Deep Red underwater housing specifically modified by them to work with the Birger mount, and it has been an ideal solution.

That being said, I am very much looking forward to seeing what we can do with an EPIC, RED's Canon mount, and the REDmote Pro!
