  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Where do Europeans buy their RED's?

Just to be clear; RED Europe is a wholly owned subsidiary of RED Digital Cinema. We are not an agent, and we don't mark up prices - UK list prices are in Sterling, are based upon the US list price plus all freight, insurance and import duties to the UK. Thereafter goods are in free transit within the EU and in the unlikely event that Customs were to challenge a product for unpaid duties, the responsibility rests with RED Europe. We have experts in the US who have spent many hours ensuring that our products are correctly classified and thereafter declared.
The import duty levied varies from product to product.
It should be noted that for any goods which are imported into the UK (or elsewhere in the EU) which are 'under-declared', Customs retain the right to revisit the import and charge whatever duty they feel is appropriate.
We do not publish a price list because we need to be flexible and stay in line with foreign exchange rates as closely as we are able to.

In addition, if your are within the EU and have a VAT registration number for your business, you do not need to pay VAT on the UK purchase either to RED Europe or, as far as I know, to your local tax office.

Hope this helps...

I was going to call you today Alan and ask you to comment on this - thanks for all the clarification.

I'll call you tomorrow about this VAT Registration Number statement. This is great news for sure. I was under the impression that we paid the price + VAT and then reclaimed back?!?!?!

Hi Alan,

I remember you saying that one of your guys went over to LA to help assemble your first Epic M.....is it still intended to have RED Europe service the new cameras in due course?

Steve,

My bad (as they say..)
UK customers must pay the VAT and then claim it back.
Only EU customers who are outside the UK get the benefit of not paying it if they are registered locally..

George,

We have a fully equipped service facility at Pinewood and we can repair most all RED product here..

Thanks for the confirmation, Alan.

Okay - guess that saves me the phone call tomorrow!!! :-)

Thanks for that Alan - you where beginning to get me excited for a moment :-))

Makes sense that we pay the VAT then reclaim - oh well, roll on Stage 4 so I can give you my money!!!

Hey Alan,

doesn´t Red Europe have an email adress?
I most certainly will order a scarlet and some batteries, when available and I need this all without VAT delivered to Germany...but...my english is not very fluent so I´d rather write it all down (VAT ID Number and stuff) than talk...

How is payment done? Do you accept American Express?

FANTASTIC news!!
If I understand right stage 3 exchange is a possibility with Red UK?

Thank you.
Best regards.
Antoine

So will we get a dollar price for the additional cost? I'm not buying on day one anyway so I am sure I'll find out what others in the UK are paying. But am keen to know how much to fork out :)

Obviously all prices with be less VAT anyway so it will just be a matter of finding out what the rest of it will be +20%

I think company owned local shops with sales and service center is a great idea, compared to the dealer system.
The Sony dealer network does not add seem to add value and puts the customer further away from the manufacturer.
Forums do a faster job of communicating product issues than dealers.
Upgrades via the net.
Engineers who know their stuff.

Dealers are good for some things, but camera pros who know their stuff do not need their hands to be held.

Felix,

I believe you can email Alan directly.

There are three ways to order (I think - Alan will correct me if I am wrong...):

1. Order directly on the Red Store and they will direct the order to RED Europe
2. I think Jarred stated at some point that there will be a version of the RED store in £/Euro at some point...
3. Order directly with Alan and his team

Payment is done via bank transfer and I believe there is a surcharge for Credit Card Payments of 2% of the total order.

Hope this helps

:-)

Tim,

Just call RED Europe with your wish list and they'll gladly tell you the prices of each piece to give you an idea of how much you need to spend...

Just add your VAT on at the end.

:-)

I'm based in Scotland, and I've never heard of an agreement between Scotland and the US that negates the need to pay tax (import or VAT). We pay the same import tax and Vat as the rest of the UK - and I've done a fair amount of importing myself over the years...

Although, I would like to know who he is as I am looking at Canon Gear for my EPIC-X when it arrives!!! :-)
He's member on many internet forums, most known in POTN (photography-on-the.net) and has a ebay shop: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/FLASH-CAMERA

But you get best prices off ebay. Just send him message of all stuff you want prices for: kerso1123@msn.com

Google "kerso" for more info and remember that dollar-euro relationship has changed a lot in the past 5 years or so and the differences aren't as mind blowing as they use to be (I got lens that costed 2800€ here for 1400€ for example), but his prices are still lowest in Europe.

All this VAT stuff should be taken with caution. Most of the European companies, with a VAT number, don't bother with paying the VAT in their own country, but again, this is not totally right. Of course things aren't that simple.

Here's a guide which explains quite well the VAT problems, in French and English :

English : http://www.pic2europe.fr/sites/www.pic2europe.fr/files/Intra-Community_VAT.doc

French : http://www.pic2europe.fr/sites/www.pic2europe.fr/files/Guide-TVA-02-08-2010.pdf

Don't forget also that there are hidden costs, like shipping and custom tax, in the case of repair, depending on the repair. For instance, the Red owners I know had to send back their Red to LA for the MX upgrade, as Red London wasn't doing it by the time.

I'm not trying to discourage people to buy Red, I'm just saying that owning this kind of equipment should be strongly studied before, if you're an individual. Another thing : warranty. Some people told me that Epic-M have a 2 year-warranty. But if you sell your Epic-M, the new buyer will only get a 2-month warranty, as the original warranty isn't transferable. Is that true ? Can anyone from Red confirm ?

Thanks,

Kristin

I think the answer is YES. the new buyer lost the total warranty and get 80 days cover warranty. the warranty isn´t transferable. I remenber read something like this in RED forum ( Red stuff for sale ).

Best regards

There are three ways to order (I think - Alan will correct me if I am wrong...):

1. Order directly on the Red Store and they will direct the order to RED Europe

Option 1 would be best, so I can pull the trigger right in the night of Nov 3rd and making sure to get one before it´s on back order. But the prices in the shop don´t include additional costs (duty/customs, insurance and stuff)

There´s no email on the contact website.

Can someone from europe clarify, if one can order from red.com? That would be awesome!! :)

EU orders placed via the web redirect to RED Europe, via a system that is already in place. You see an on screen confirmation in dollars but the order is then processed by RED Europe who will bill in £'s/€ (incl shipping & handling, plus vat if appropriate).

The system recognises that you are in the EU and this is what happens (from an actual order screen)

"Based on your EU billing address, your order will be processed directly through RED EUROPE LTD.

ORDER PROCESSING DETAILS
Shortly after you submit this order, your BOMB SQUAD rep from RED EUROPE LTD will contact you to confirm your order, coordinate payment with credit card or wire transfer (prelimninary info below) and discuss shipping and handling options. At that time, your invoice will be provided to reflect the actual total of your purchase.

For more information regarding your order, please email RedEurope@red.com or call +44(0)1753-785454."

Expected to be the same for November 3rd orders.
