I shot on a MX-Red two weeks ago for a food commercial that was around the 6600 area. A friend of mine who owns and rents a redone with a smaller serial number and was told by Red he was (and still is, i think) ineligible. I guess rental houses are being favored.

Kinda sad, though, because my friend has lost two big jobs because he doesn't have the upgrade. Hopefully Red will get more of these chips out soon. No one should be hurt by the supply and demand downfall, but I sometimes wonder if it's the small fish that should. :P

Red has publicly said they are doing upgrades based on original delivery dates og Red One. They have also said that whoever has MORE than one red one, whenever their earliest number comes up can choose to upgrade a later camera instead of the early one. Useful if a camera is outon a long term job, and could explain the existance of those high number MX Reds.

And some rental houses did get their upgrades ahead of lower serial numbers. I lost rentals to some of these cameras as well. But I am currently MX'ed so it is water under the bridge. :-)

RED has said it a billion times, MX upgrade has nothing at all to do with serial numbers, its delivery dates that count which is why some rental houses will have higher numbers that were paid for quicker than private owned lower numbers that held off on paying for delivery. Also if one holds a MX reservation you can upgrade a higher serial number cam in place of your lower number cam.

Sort of. If one had a RED ONE on order and owned a qualifying early camera one could have the new camera shipped with upgrade rather than sending the old one back.

Well not sort of. The example I am speaking of was ahead of the line. Supposedly it was in order to allow this rental house to get up to speed on the new sensor - which I could understand - if they weren't renting it out!

Anyway - like I said - water under the bridge.

The line was jumped by some people. No argument there.

RED aren't angels, but they do make kick ass sensors!

So no hard feelings.

Not sure what the big brew ha ha is... soon everyone will be MXed.

Red has been flexible with owners of more than one camera. If your low number camera is busy when you get the upgrade notice, you can send in the higher number camera. I don't think they are favoring rental houses. Just being friendly in the Red way.

I just confirmed with a buddy of mine who owes a 7000 RED camera he got that up graded to a MX a couple of weeks ago for pilot season. The bummer is he has serial # 152 out on rental for the last year and tried sending his cam to RED without a RMA number. RED's shipping department shipped his camera back saying he has to wait for everyone to get up graded before his camera gets the up grade. This seems very fair to me. It's quite clear RED does not favor any rental houses.

Important must read.

Please, PLEASE, please - when you receive the "Your camera is eligible for M-X upgrade" email, do not just send in your camera. You MUST wait until you have been assigned an RMA number by the M-X team. Remember, the M-X upgrade facility is not located at the RED Lake Forest headquarters. You send a camera there, you send it to the wrong place.

I know it is a long email when you are notified, but do read the whole thing. If you do not follow the guidelines therein, it only makes it more complicated for everyone involved and adds delays to the process.
