  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When will we be able to use Redgamma 2 and Redcolour 2?

Yes now would be a great time.. I am back and forth on how to get the new color science in CS5 for a final deadline for March 1st.

Any update?

We have a short that we would really like the new color science before we start grading. The project is already edited in Adobe Premiere with plans to grade in After Effects... any suggestions for workflow with REDCINEX if Adobe doesn't get the new color science out (since we already have clips edited in Premiere)?

export a cmx3600 edl and conform in RCX356, grade one light or best light, and export an openEXR sequence... do the rest in AE CS5...

My suggestion is NOT to grade in AE. There are number of proper grading solutions on the market, not least of which is Resolve, that supports the new CS. Export EDL and you're good to go...

if there's some marketing shenanigans going on here for cs6 that's fine, but it would be nice to know if there's actually planned support for cs5 or if it's holding off for the next full release.

in any case, can storm do any kind of conforming?

They certainly should be releasing RG2/RC2 anytime soon. I have a feeling it will be a substantial upgrade hence the wait. But most certainly not CS6. Cs5 is not even a year old, and you know Adobe style it would be a big fanfare before they release a new version.

yeah i suppose, but there's this trend in software these days to release something every year, with hardly any new features and a bunch of little bugs that don't get fixed until the next release. i hope that doesn't happen here. and i think you're right that we would already be hearing some marketing stuff, but you never know how close we could be to that.

I agree with you Paul. I have noticed that around the web Adobe has reinforced their CS5 sales message, mostly for the Mac. Speculation is that they are rationally clearing up all misinformation about CS5 and need for CUDA cards. When most traditional mac users factor in the additional cost of an Nvidia CUDA card to the purchase of a Mac plus CS5, suddenly transcoding to prores which they are already accustomed to makes sense. Adobe failed to get out the message that Nvidia Cuda cards were just a luxury and PPro can work just fine with ATI cards.

IMO the reason of RC2/RG2 delay of support from Adobe should probably be the bugs of Premiere 5.03. Adobe had been very responsive in the past couple of years, just rembember, Premiere 4.1 and 4.2 with the support of R3D and others. They will certainly not wait for CS6 to release the update..
It's also possible Adobe is delaying every thing in purpose.. The new FC is almost there with promises that it will be amazing.. Maybe Adobe is holding the updates just to balance a little bit the new features of its competitor..

It is very unlike Adobe to let a buggy release stay for so long. I guess they know no one is really using that update and prepping a major fix to those bugs. FCP is what it is. If I was Adobe I would not even bother trying to convert FCP users to PPro, I would just concentrate on the core strengths of production premium, photoshop, PPro, and AE. The missing pieces in CS5 are Audition and color. The missing piece in FCP is AE. ONE Apple figures Motion out, you can kiss the Apple FCP users goodbye. Once Adobe figgures out A dynamically linked sound App and a full color grading/ App or realtime playback in AE, thats when the real battle will begin. There is still a lots of room for a grading App. Lets face it, we all bought into Blackmagic Resolve for the mac, whilst its a powerful and intuitive application, its resource hungry (expensive, cards, boards,) ,not very responsive with a mouse, and crashes and freezes for short periods whilst it does calculations even with the cuda cards. It was poorly ported to the Mac. There is realtime color grading with one Quadro card in PPro.
With the current speedy Color corection response with cuda cards in PPro, I mean fluid playback with many effects applied Adobe has the advantage to keep the desktop market.
