  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When will RED be accepting orders??

No one knows the answer to this.
Could be tomorrow - could be a year from now when the camera is finalized and ready to go out.

Just sit tight.
I'm certain that when reservations and/or orders are being taken everyone will know.

I hope they skip the reservation route and mass produce the Scarlet. Which would basically mean that they have like 10,000 - 20,000 of these cameras for order on launch day and most of us are able to order one or more.

I think this is in line with what they have said about the pricing. The under $3,000 is only possible when they mass produce this camera.

I hope they mass produce but I'm kinda hoping that I won't see this thing on Best Buy (I'd rather be part of smaller group of Scarleters)

I'm not saying I think it'll be in Best Buy - but the group of 'Scarleters' definitely won't be small.

i'd prefer they didn't wait until 10,000 were built to ship en masse. I'd love to pre-order and have my trio shipped as soon as they are built and tested.

Pre-order makes us who are members here become good "betatesters".
Then the response might resolve issues that may come up...

We also get our cameras earlier :D

Who cares if it is sold at Best Buy or not. Wherever it is sold people that want it will be able to buy it. I am sure Red will be happy to announce its availability the minute they feel they are ready. It has been only a week since the announcement and is expected for early 2009. That is almost a year from now. We have to sit tight and wait.

You are funny. First you are saying that this price is perfect and now you say you wont' see it at Best Buy. The Scarlet will get to the masses (maybe not masses masses but it will reach many, many people). If you want to be unique, buy an Epic. You won't see someone else with it very often :).

I don't care where I have to buy it as long as it delivers. And when it is available at Best Buy, it would also mean you can swap the unit when something is wrong. Nothing wrong with that. But I don't expect it to sell through Best Buy. I think they will sell it online only.

How many $3,000 camcorders do you see at Best Buy anyway?

I think the pre-order thing was something they tried and probably are ready to move past now. I know when I first came out with the DVX Book back in 2004, I took pre-orders, and really wish I hadn't. I ended up missing my shipping date by 11 days and that was a rough 11 days. I mean, I would have prepaid on the spot at NAB if they were taking orders, but with all due respect I certainly could understand why they might not want to!

If they're going for mass-market acceptance among the $3,000 crowd, why not do it the same way everyone else does -- through dedicated photo/video resellers? Let Abel and B&H and Calumet and VideoGuys and Roscor and DVW and Lerro and Platts sell it. And let the resellers decide if they want to take pre-orders. When the HVX came out, those who had pre-ordered made life hell on their resellers when there was a massive multi-month shortage, but at least it'd be the resellers dealing with it instead of the manufacturer.

Scarlet PreOrders

I was at the NAB Red Booth on opening day and was fortunate enough to run into Jarred. I asked point blank about Scarlet reservations and, with a Cheshire smile, and he simply said "no reservation system in place, expect it in early '09."

I got the feeling they're simply going to flood the market. Makes a lot of sense. I mean...3K for $3K...it's like crack for anyone getting into their first camera package. Besides, make the camera purchase a no brainer, and suddenly an entire generation grows up using REDCODE.

It would be good if it was sold thru the professional camera resellers. Many of them become very knowledgeable about the product and can guide you and help you out if you have any questions or problems.
