  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

when to use REDLOG?

I'm using RedLog since day one and changed from CameraRGB to RedColor when Build 30 came out - which is a huge improvement.

I find RedGamma also very useful for offline editing off R3Ds or transcoded QT because it instantly gives the picture conveniently without grading a look that no one questions in an offline stage.

Why i don't see RedLog Film options in redcinex? I have build 262 and Rocket and there is just RedLog in gamma space... :(

Same here. I have:

REDGamma
Linear
sRGB
REC 709
REDSpace
RedLog
PDLog 685
PDLog 985

Was RedLog Film replaced with the PDLog's? BTW, I'm assuming that "PD" stands for "Printing Density." I'm pretty sure PDLog 685 is a ten bit Cineon curve using a black point of 95 and white point of 685--does this mean that no data is written between 0 and 94 and 686 and 1023?

And I'm assuming PDlog 985 uses a white point of 985 with same black point of 95.

P.S. It seems that RedLog Film has yet to be officially released.

Have you found that working with Redcolor matrix and Rec709 gamma or REDgamma has impacted your images negatively? Are you not able to get what you are looking for out of those? Assuming that that you are working in a REC709 environment most of the time and finishing for HD/Web it seems like you would be okay working with those spaces. Now, that's not to say you can't experiment with Redlogfilm or whatever else comes along, but you should understand how those work, and how to get the most out of them. Personally I usually don't have a problem getting good images from REC709 or REDgamma using the REDcolor matrix. YMMV.

I would recommend making sure your system is calibrated properly and that your working environment is relatively neutral.

REDLOGFILM

REDLOGFILM

Hey Graeme,

when using redlogfilm, is it necessary to apply a log to lin lut or can you simply grade linear and your good?

Hardave - can you use your full name please as per forum rules.

A log output is usually graded through a print emulation LUT so the order would be:

Log data -> grading -> print emulation -> display

However, it's perfectly fine to grade as-is, although it might be easier to use REDGamma (or the forthcoming REDGamma2) as a starting point in that case.

Hi Graeme. A followup here as I am preparing a series for online just now.

I like RLF a lot.
But I'll use whatever gamma (as a startingpoint) that looks like it will grade well.
The colorist seems pretty happy with that approach, but is there any real disadvantage of going redlog when I think that works better for the image... -:)

That's for like 1 out of 20 shots...

Just curious if you think that's a bad idea?

I probably won't stop doing what I think I see that works the best anyhow, but I am curious as to what I might lose by that approach.
If it is serious stuff, I am allways open to reconsider...

While I'm not Graeme, IMHO you can do what you like if the colorist is accessing the R3D – nothing will ever escape him/her.
If you transcode to DPX or ProRes or whatever (10 bit minimum, of course), RLF should be a very good idea, cause the bits a redistributed in a way that preserves most of your sensor data.
I'm very interested in Graeme's take on this, of course.

As to "it doesn't matter if it's RAW" I disagree of course -:)
At least if you're grading with a Rocket spitting out the data to the grading app.
That's why I am bitching all the RAW grading vendors about the curve in the RED-room...

The effect on the grade has been similar when using a RAW grader (on the ones I have done tests with) and going file-based, and that makes sense as the Rocket spits out RGB to the grading app.

It is not RAW anymore when it leaves the "meta" room, and that is exactly how I want it to be BTW.

Of course it is simpler to do corrections on the metadata with a RAW grader...

Yes, fishing here, too - but I see it very clearly in my tests...

When I choose RedLog sometimes, it is because it outputs smoother blacks (at least on the M project I am now onlining)

I have used it for about 5% of the images...

Looks good, so resultwise it makes sense to do it.

Generally I am a practical man. If it works, it works... -:)
If not: Solve it.
