  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When is apple releasing 12 core Mac Pro?

Other thing could be that Apple are maybe a bit slow these days or perhaps doing something fresh? iPad cases slipping, Mac Pros long past due date as well as Macbook Pros etc. seems like somethings slightly going wrong over at Apple HQ...

Looking this over, it does appear that Apple hasn't released hardware of any real computing significance since October 20th, 2009:

Also...not that its a huge deal but their suppose to bring out the idea of a new OS in June or about then...as that was their expected date for new systems...every 12-18months I believe was what was said...they still testing though 10.6.3 for last 3 months...coming 4 months soon I think if they don't release it soon...

Plus I don't see how Logic got the update for 64bit over the net whilst FCS got nothing...

Supposedly the iPad is priority and all the rest will fall into place once the iPad is out the door...guessing that, that piece of speculation is true.

Perhaps Mac Pro's in June with special intel processors with lower power consumptions, more silent and new 27" screens to go with them?

This is a pretty typical length of time for testing point releases if you look at the ones over Tiger and Leopard.

Since Final Cut runs on Quicktime, it is a lot more complicated to port than Logic would have been. I'm not expecting to see FCP go 64 bit until the next major version upgrade.

Apple is a big company. They can do more than one thing at a time, you know...

Marketing resources etc. and trying to get everything into place for the iPad, although it's a massive company, you don't want to move focus on a product that is on the boarder line of peoples minds of whether it's great or not. Then again this is all just thoughts, only truth known is that updates are needed.

But yeah you are right, its a big company and they can do more then one thing at a time...but what's up with the delays then? Better be something damn good on its way out...

I ordered the 6-core i7 Gulftown Alienware Area 51 today.

I'm hoping the GTX 295 card I ordered will work with CS5's CUDA acceleration...

Hey Tom,

at the moment only the GTX285 works with CUDA. This will stay the case at least until release, so if you have the option it might be best to downgrade to the GTX285 and then buy a FERMI card once they are out and confirmed to be operational with CS5.

Paul, is that to say the 295 is not compatible with the CUDA acceleration in CS5? Are you sure about that? Is there anyone who might be able to confirm this issue?

Like you said, maybe I should downgrade this before it builds, in that case.

I guess I could call Adobe, but I've never had much luck with that in the past.

Would two Gtx 285s in SLI be helpful for CS5 CUDA vs one card?

Hey Tom,

yes, unfortunately there's a VERY specific list of supported cards that are hardwired into the betas of CS5:

Quadra FX 5800
Quadra FX 4800
Quadra CX
GeForce GTX285
Quadra FX 3800

I think that once CS5 is released to retail they will slowly add support for other cards, but I'd go with one of these to make sure you're up and running out of the box.

I don't know if that shows up as something else, but I guess it's be a safer bet and the upside is you can always switch off SLI when using CS5 and re-enable it for everything else, if there was an issue.

SLI and CUDA don't mix too well right now, or at least not on a commercial application level. Most developers are having enough trouble integrating support for a variety of single cards. One of the biggest flaws with using GPUs, and even with an abstraction layer such as CUDA, is that each GPU has different abilities and support for each GPU must be tailored to fit. Or at least that's what needs to be done in order to maximize performance when available. To simply create an all-encompasing GeForce 200-series or Quadro 3000 driver wouldn't benefit anyone that much. And there would be no point in spending the extra money on the more powerful cards if that were the approach.

IMNSHO, GPU implementation and language interfaces such as CUDA both still have a long way to mature. It's all very promising technology, but it's evolving and growing so fast right now, it's hard for any of it to solidify.
