  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When do you think the Raven will be obsolete?

Seems like almost all the new cameras coming out are 4k, and its just a matter of time until the standard is 5k. When do you think the raven will be obsolete?

Depends entirely on your own needs/wants and also on how you define "obsolete".

For instance, I know people still shooting with the RED ONE! For them the R1 is not yet quite obsolete.

Yet there are others who will say the R1 has been "obsolete" for many years now.

I would say look at Netflix's technical specifications requirements for their shows to set your benchmark. I would say 4K will be a standard for at least 10 more years. Display technology needs to be pretty much standardised at 8K and at affordable prices for the next jump. The standards are 4K now, 8K later.

the difference with all the 4k cameras coming out and the raven is high speed and raw, the fact i can do 100fps at 4k with decent compression is why the raven is going to be a viable tool for years to come.

Yes this.

Alexa(Mini) is still the most used camera(for cinema) and has a lot lower resolution than the Raven, so I wouldn't worry to much.

Also this is a great study of what makes for good image fidelity (hint it's not all about resolution), very eye opening. Can't recommend this enough.

Saw this in the theater and he live switched between 6k acquisition, 4k dci, 2k dci, and people gasped not being able to tell a difference.

When repair cost exceeds 75% of the used camera street value or when the supply of necessary spare repair parts is exhausted..

The only mistake RED made was to give it the EF mount. It's not that big a deal for PL lenses but you can't use E or M lenses. But I would not claim that this flaw makes the Raven obsolete. As David said, people are still using the R1. And the Scarlet and Epic.

When the Hydrogen 1 gets a full set of modules.

I reckon that was a partially intentional decision by RED, it helps ensure that pro shooters who do the jobs which require PL lenses will be steered away from buying a Raven and instead get a higher end camera from RED.

5k is only .5 and considering how little there is to see above 1080 I think the Raven will be useful for several years. The limits are on the sensor. However, I get great results and Neato does the rest. I was trained in Fine Art painting when Super 8 was the only economical option. The ability to shoot at 60fps and higher will keep its value. I’m looking to buy an 8k but that’s because I’m a hardware junky but FCP does not support...yet...

I am surprised how slow Nikon, Sony have been at upping the FPS so until I can buy a true handheld at 5k there’s no real reason to upgrade. 8k streaming is far off. Though I’m not making a large budget movie.

If I was buying my first Red today it would be 8k

It's not that surprising - 4.5K RAW @120fps is not a trivial matter. RED was thinking ahead with the Raven as far as specs go. If I had the choice of any RED camera it would not be 8K, it would probably be Gemini.

Aaah obsolete.
Ugly word don't you think :)
I got my BT Scarlet in fall 2012.
I am still using it and still in love with what I see.
Until it breaks down and can't be fixed, it's not obsolete to me.

I don't think any camera becomes obsolete as long as it works...I have a film camera from 1939 and it still has life in it. I also wouldn't worry because you have a camera that captures REDCODE RAW (one of the most flexible and beautiful codecs out there). With IPP2 and further iterations, your camera will have life for a very, very long time.

I dont think we will see the Raven become obsolete for a very long time. Just looking at the current market. While it may be the low end of the RED Eco-System its still a very high end camera with specs that are far above what others are doing in the same price range and even high in some areas. At the end of the day its the same sensor used on some major films and from what I can see the Dragon chip is still being used on some big films even today.

I bought a Raven for my company since it checks off so many boxes and did so at a great cost. I mean we have 4.5K Raw at 120fps no buffer in a small package for around 10-12k used. Cant beat that. It may not have the best low light, but with the right lens and post it cleans up really nice.
