  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's your guess for Epic-L?

ehem,
with 5k redcode 5:1 beeing around 6GB/minute you should
have at least 2x 126 gb ssd cards.
3200 usd
2x ssd red stations, one back up at least
500 usd
add the ssd module
1500 usd (its not included in the brain, like with the red1)
than you need
the side handle module
power module with batteries
a LCD
baseplate/handles etc.
i/o module

and than if you can afford,
you take an EVF, back up cables, more batteries
you take another ssd card, a EVF

pretty simple calculation: a workable r1 set up did cost around 30-35 k usd back then.
with a Brain only at 12 k usd, you can be damn sure that 5k for assecoires will not be enough, if you want to use the camera in a cinestyle setup.

all this without a lens. add the 6k for a rpz on top of everything,
and if you start from scratch a redrocket is a must too, especially when dealing with 5k material.

dont get me wrong, i dont want to burst bubbles, but i am sure an epic-l
is not a competition for the F3 or so imho, its a tool with no compromises at a certain pricepoint which is 1/5 compared to other high end tools.

Original my setup would be:

> 900 - 2,8" Touchscreen
> 1500 - SSD module
> 250 - Red station
> 1900 - 2x64 GB SSD
> 300 - Module adapter
> 550 - Redmote
> 1250 - Battery module
> 500 - Mount

= $7150

And yes it is not a 100% cinestyle workable camera but it is a workable setup.

i see, but wouldnt it make more sense to buy a used r1 mx with a full set up for 20k?

no worries about storage, batteries etc.
the 2,8 inch is really really small (the si2k has one too, but framing is difficult with it)

That would, to put it in Jim's own words be a big mistake, since it's not very future proof in terms of being able to upgrade your system.

Well you wouldn't need to buy a Red screen, you could buy from other brands as well, maybe with a bigger size, or pay the extra 700 for the 5" version. As to storage and batteries, you could probably find some way to work around it.

I imagine that in 6 months time, you will be able to buy a fully rigged R1-MX set up for about the same price as an Epic-S brain. Most of the stage 2 Epic owners will be looking to sell.

The market will also be swamped with accessories as stage 3 owners send their R1 bodies back.

But realistically, who wants a huge camera like that when they could save a bit more cash and buy an Epic-S system?

The "last frontier" for me buying an EPIC-S system would be 12 K for the most basic shooting package.

That's what I expected to pay when the Scarlet S35 brain was 7K.

At this moment I'd say the most barebones working shooting package is going to run around 16 K.

I still hope that RED can perhaps make a "poor man's Epic-S kit" that still uses the CF Card module, etc, for a special discount price.

That way they can perhaps steal some of the "upper" AF100 crowd.

the price was always for the brain only.
lets say the brain costs whaever you desired, you still would need to spend 10-15 k without a lens to have workable setup with enough storage and power.
what was your plan for this in the first place?

15K was my roof: 7K brain + basic stuff + at least 3 primes and then in the future, add the pro audio module, etc... Now, if at 10K for the brain I could still stretch it out, but if it starts at 12K or 13K, I will have to consider the Starlet 2/3rds and wait...

20k for a basic but nice shooting package at 5k with HDRx™ in a 6 pounds body.
Hummmm..., I'm worried about getting arrested when buying it.

Here is what Jim said to Joseph. I took it as indicating a price above $12K but I see that could have been an erroneous assumption.
I don't think so, Terry. I think your analysis seems pretty logical to me -- at least based on what Jim said (and, frankly, we probably shouldn't place too much weight on that, given Red's motto). If $14K is the midpoint between $12K and $16K, I would think "a little closer" would be mean closer to, but maybe above, $13K and "much closer" would mean below $13K, maybe $12.5K or so. If Jim is confident about pricing (given that Epic-S is tentatively scheduled to begin production in a few months), if the price were below $12K, I think he might've said so just to derail wild speculation. Of course, if he did but then decided he had to raise the price, he would sour a lot of people. So maybe he's trying to stay as vague as possible. But then he didn't have to say anything at all.

Will the new Lite be the same body shell of the old s35 or will it be packaged in a bigger Epic body? Seems a shame to lose the DSLR form of the s35.
