  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's your guess for Epic-L?

Despite everythings that were said, I still hope Epic-L brain around 8000$,+ side handle, redmote, etc... ready to shoot pack around 12000$.
A pack with the 17-50 would be great too !

First of all, who in the world would spend $14K on a sensor and settle with a 2,8" LCD-screen? Second of all, even though there seems to be consensus over the 12-14K price, this will eventually mean 60-100% price increase, which is extreme. Of course that's what happended to the Fixed Scarlet so why not? Shirley I hope this won't happen, but it probably will.
That happened to the $3K fixed Scarlet, but not to the price announced a year ago -- that one went up "only" 21%. A year ago, when Scarlet 3K fixed was $4,750, Scarlet S35 was listed as $7K. A 21% increase would mean a price of a little less than $8,500. Not likely.

I am expecting to pay the same price as for the current RED One M-X...with the crucial difference that I hope to get a fully working package for that price (25K). Should it be more, then no dice. Can't afford it.

Interesting times ahead regardless. It's a bargain even with a much higher price. But I think Jim knows we're all here hoping for an enthusiast's camera. 10K for brain is a realistic increase, but the sky is the limit.

My hope is:
Bundled package: 15-18K. Brain only 10-12K. With some nice lenses in the mid-range that tops out at 25-28K. Sounds about right -- an Epic-S fully working for the price Epic-X's brain :)

Well... Epic-x stage 3 has an 2,8" lcd :)

14k to compete with the F3 would be a killer deal.
An Epic for that kind of money would cause a lot of stir.

My Guess

My Guess

Here's my guess for a studio package.

EPIC L STUDIO BUNDLE

EPIC - L - BRAIN
PL LENS MOUNT

NO HDR MODE and limited frame rates... with a max of 30fps at 5k

S35 and ANA modes-using the maximum allowed chip size for ANA modes that the Epic's chip will allow vertically.

RED LCD (5.6) - for an AC
BOMB EVF - for operator
RED BATTERY - Discounts for multiple batteries at time of purchase
RED BATTERY CHARGER

SIDE SSD
64 GIG CCD CARD discounts for multiple cards at time of purchase.

$15,900 - limited time offer - non refundable %20 deposit before 2011

All cameras have a lifespan some short and some longer but if the EPIC-L is designed and marketed for a majority of professional users buy rather than rent the price needs to be at a place that can be paid for and wrapped into budgets within 1 year to 2 years... so I say, cut the features and lower the price and get it into the maximum amount buyers that need a non-fixed lens camera solution.

And why 5K ? WHat if, as the word "light" could mean, the camera is limited to a sensor resolution of 3K ? That would still make a great camera. The Alexa can only do 2K, Sony's 1080P... So why not for that kind of price range staying at 3K ? (and having HDRx back !)

Because Red would look really cynical saying that 4K was the future, "rendering obsolescence obsolete," then fobbing off a 3K camera at such a high price point, even if it was S35 -- that would be a huge step backward. There's no point in dumbing down the camera to compete with the likes of the F3.

That's a good point.
So if we want to speculate about the price of this future camera, we could also look at bitrates. Maybe the camera won't have the same bitrates possibilities. (but still stay a beast shooting RAW)

I guess we also should wait until Jim and his team tell us about the camera.

I don't see the price of the brain doubling, or nearly doubling. Of course, I could be wrong, but I'd guess $11.5K brain only. 5K rez for sure.

I would think all cameras will include HDR.

But maybe only Epic-X will have ANA modes as one way to give it a few more features compared to Epic-S.

Doesn't guessing on the price just go to frustrate people? How bout we give them a bit of time, like 'til they announce release... then we whine and cry we don't have enough money. Some people are going to read this board and start freaking out when no one even knows what it will be yet, and aren't there enough bullheaded angry discussions going on here?

I guess if people get frustrated by this sort of thing.... they should not click a thread titled "What's your guess for Epic-L?"

For most of us, it just passes the time.... some of us have been waiting here for 2 years remember ;-D

I think people's estimation have earlier shown to be somehow not far from the truth... unfortunately.

Yah Red is in a complicated position. On one hand, they have this new flagship camera with the best specs of any film camera in the world. They are charging $58,000 for a machined package, and $28,000 for a brain when later released to Stage 4.

They also have the Red One MX -- which is $25,000 for the brain. New customers have been purchasing/renting this product very recently ....

Now, they have a camera in the Epic-S/Lite that they don't want to make too close to the Epic in features, otherwise it will hurt the Epic.

And already, it seems it will outspec the Red One in many ways -- but then they risk pissing new customers off who purchased a Red One MX, only to have this camera released for a LOT less money.

Then they have the people who feel they were "promised" a S35 brain for $7-8,000 -- and now are going to have to pay more. Perhaps twice as much.

I guess the cold hard truth is that they inevitably cannot please everyone -- and they will need to do what's best for them as a business, as a brand, and do their best to make as many customers happy as they can.

I sympathize with them. Then again they are sitting on gold and are just starting to mine it -- the fun is about to begin ....
