  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Whats going on with this Gamma shit going back and fourth between FCP and Color and back to FCP

Its disgusting, off, and a pain to work with.

3 pics not best examples but its a quick sample.

Pic 1 REDCINE what i expected
Pic 2 FCP fine its what i expected.
Pic 3 is in Color no processing no nothing yet its crushed and frustrating thats not what i expected. I graded it sent it back to FCP and i dont trust its correct.

Anybody know whats going on?

Hi there - a few questions if I may...

Are you grading native R3D footage in Color or transcoded media?

If the answer is transcoded - to what codec:

Uncompressed 4:2:2
AJA 10-bit RGB
Prores (SQ/HQ)

When you render out of Color what is your output render format?

Let see if we can answer this for you....

REDCINE exporting out Animation as Requested by the compositor.
Blackmajic 10bit Uncompressed was my original choice but that didn't work at all it was pure garbage snow.

Into FCP looks fine.
but as soon as i go into Color its shifted.
I dont even render out of color and its shifted.
But im rendering out 10Bit Uncompressed 4:2:2 will not give me Animation option.

I compensated in color graded everything looking fine again , scopes and all.
And bam its shifted again.

Ah! Animation! DO NOT put that anywhere near Color! Color is NOT compatible with that codec at input or output. Thing is it will actually allow you to bring it in and not complain. I think I've actually managed to render it out as uncompressed before but that was pure luck.

..That's your first problem....

See PAGE84 of the Color manual....

Thank you so very much for pointing that out.
I get to do it all over again Thanks LOL =)

I love how you said see page 84 of the manual.

Are you Bob Sliga or someone like that?

No problem - good luck.

There are always 'gamma issues' involved with the world of Quicktime, but if you take R3D files into Color and render out Uncompressed 4:2:2 for example you should be okay.

All the best....

I suppose im gonna go 10Bit Uncompressed 422 out of REDCINE into FCP send to Color export out 10Bit Uncompressed 422 to FCP

And that will be my master codec.

Do you like?
Or should i use a diff codec.
The compositor does not want ProRes 422 HQ compression.
He wants some form of uncompressed.

Thanks for your help.

Sounds fine to me - what's the final delivery format?

I believe they are going to stick with HD CAM SR.
Its the request of the animators and compositors that i stay uncompressed.

have you played with AJA 10 bit and or black magic 10 bit? codecs
can you comment on them
thanks.

and do you prefer any of them over
standard 10Bit Uncompressed 422 thats available in RedCine , FCP and Color.

I was waiting for you to go down that path....

If they are going out to SR are you laying back @ 1920x1080 4:4:4 RGB or 1920x1080 4:2:2?

If it's 1920x1080 4:2:2 then yep - stick to uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2.

If they are after a 1920x1080 4:4:4 (DUAL LINK) master then it might be time to start to explore the other codecs.

I have a whole new problem.
I cannot get anything to come out of REDCINE Uncompressed 10 bit.
8bit yes but not 10 bit
not BlackMagic 10bit, not Uncompressed 10 Bit 422

Any thoughts?

Wow - okay - new one on me...just tested my end - on 3.12 - and 10bit 4:2:2 1920x1080 comes out fine. Not sure what to suggest there - sorry!

What do you get out.....just black video?

Have you considered exporting out a DPX or TIFF sequence from of REDCINE, giving that to your compositors (they'll love it), and then getting them to render out a 10-bit Uncompressed QT? Alternatively I'm sure they can always export out a DPX sequence and you can use the AJA tool to get it back into Final Cut Pro & Color (there are lots of posts around these forums discussing this AJA workaround).

You always want to give your VFX guys and girls the BEST material they can work with. If they're using After Effects, thanks to the latest updates, that the original R3D file. Otherwise, TIFFs and DPXs make sense.

The workflow that's worked best for me is just giving the VFX kids DPX sequences, and then I get DPX sequences back ready for grading.

Just throwing some more options out there...

DPX is cool but Gluetools is not in the budget that would take from my pie
Tiff is a nice option but huge files space.
AJA i downloaded but wont work correctly in 10bit
But no doubt DPX is wonderful.

Thank you.

Just curious - what do you mean by AJA not working correctly in 10-bit?

I'm having gamma shifting issues from color to FCP and that's with log and transferred redcode native files. Everything looks good in color, and after I render and bring back to FCP, it's darker.

Yep...

Me too.
If i export AJA 10 bit RGB, it looks darker.

...and if i put it back in a FCP Sequence Uncompressed 10 bit and render in high precision YUV, it then go lighter...

Too bad, because AJA 10 bit RGB codec is EXTREMELY clean.

Go figure...

Quick test: Send back to final cut uncompressed renders from color.
Then export the uncompressed 10 bit timeline of fcp (using file-export-quicktime movie) and compare the uncompressed renders from color with the export from final cut (you have to open them with quicktime and uncheck enable final cut studio compatibility in quicktime preferences). If you try to change display settings from gamma 1.8 to 2.2, the gamma of the quicktimes doesn't change.
So don't count on fcp gamma, it's not a real 2.2 it's just a compensation (bad) that fcp tries to do.
