Anyone have any thought on why RED even offered to give credit towards EPIC or Scarlet for previous owners of Red 1. I believe they are taking all these cameras back in to add something new to it for 2012 what else would be the reason for having 1000's of Red 1 bodies. Just a thought

Obosesence obsolete was the idea of R1, the last camera you yould ever need to buy.

That was the original ideal, but I think RED acknowledges that technology marches on, and the more realistic mantra is now "fully upgradeable." So they built a box that could support the idea through modularity and are taking back the original packaging at its original cost.

It will be quite interesting to see what they do with all of the original R1 bodies - most of these aren't that old and have a ton of life left in them. Awesome workhorse cameras. RED could certainly use them to build a non-profit arm, or for educational purposes, or they could refurb and re-sell as Battle-Tested. I'm sure we'll see. It is in their interest to keep them working. I hate to see such a great, great camera put out to pasture too soon.

I can think of worse idea's then giving 5000 red ones to schools around the country or world.

I believe there would be some sort of tax write off involved and the next generation film makers would be using Red cameras to learn the craft on. Sounds like a win-win-win if this is the plan.

To honour their motto, "Obsolescence is Obsolete".

They actually bought them back for the original selling price.

Unprecedented.

I have Sony canon and Panasonic cameras the manufacturer never offered to buy back after three years for the original price.

I think they did it in the best interests of their customers.

I suspect that some buyers will sell there R1 & buy a scarlet, it's a cheaper option & will suit many people better than trading in for an Epic.
Does the trade in apply to 8305?

Couple of theories, none of them based on fact or reality.

1. Battle-tested resales with a 1 year warranty.
2. Sources of parts for repair as RED Ones age and start to break down.
3. Jim decided to be really, really generous and help people transition to Epic. I can't think of a better trade-in deal than this.

Let's see what happens. In the meantime, props to RED for doing that trade-in deal, a gesture that is very much appreciated by your early customer base.

I actually think it is this simple.

Its a philosophy.

Jim and RED appreciate the early adopters. These customers provided the seed money and the customer base and a belief in the program. This community coexists because of this leverage.

I think that when they went to EPIC in keeping with the philosophy they offered the original owners 100% rebate on their original purchase.

We can have all the paranoid conspiracy theories we want but I think it is really this simple.

I think David hit the nail on the head.

Yes, although the ill-informed may question the reason behind such an unprecedented financial deal, it really is that simple.

Absolutely.

People have a hard time with kindness.

They sometimes refuse to believe people can be good and kind.

It seems that, at the core, that is what RED folks are. But you know what? People like to fight that instead of just believing that it's true.

Human nature can be quite strange.

These kinds of things keep my faith in humans very high.
